Thank you to all of the Chula Vista Middle Staff Members who participated in this video. It was spirt week when we were filming and some of the staff members were wearing jerseys because it was Sports Day. :)
Circle the Terms is another approach to simplifying numerical expressions with Order of Operations.
It varies from the traditional PEMDAS method because it has fewer steps. Students often assume that multiplication is ALWAYS before division and addition is ALWAYS before subtraction, but this is not the case, it should be simplified from left to right. With the Circle the Terms method, this confusion is avoided.
1. Circle all the Terms. (Terms are separated by + or - symbols)
2. Simplify Left to Right
This simple technique is from the College Preparatory Mathematics Curriculum Course 2 (CPM).
