Defining propaganda: propaganda is a controversial and contested word, its definition has shifted over time and even today we argue about its meaning. David Welch, Noam Chomsky, Alastair Campbell, and John Pilger introduce the concepts behind our exhibition, Propaganda: Power and Persuasion.

Any argument designed to persuade, as opposed to a dispassionate analysis based on evidence, is trying to manipulate the hearer’s will, and is therefore both dishonest and negative, not neutral. If you’re an attorney it’s like writing a brief as opposed to a memo.
