Do you need a spindle sander?

One of my absolute favorite tools in my shop is my oscillating spindle sander, used specifically for sanding inside curves. In this video, I'll help you decide if you need one.

I had some plates 3d printed with a slight lip on them and turned my oscillating drum sander into a pattern sander. It works kind of like an inverted routing bit. Instead of a bearing to ride on the pattern I just put the pattern down on the top of the sander and it rides on the lip while I sand. I end up with a finished piece about 1/8" larger than the pattern, but it makes working with delicate patterns a lot more manageable than using a router.

I finally pulled the trigger and bought a spindle sander. Making too maybe things with tight grooves that I am trying of breaking my hands and wrists over sanding.

I do a lot of custom cut charcuterie boards for my business and can not imagine going without my oscillating spindle sander now that I have one. I was using a dremel with mini sanding drums.. yeah. Still do for fine detail work but this one relatively small device saves me SO much time and effort.

I own several Wen products and I have to say that I really like them. I'm not having to use them everyday but Wen tools have surprised me own how sturdy their tools are. My newest thing is a wood lathe and as soon as I make a spot in my garage just for it I will be turning ASAP.

I purchased the Rigid Belt/Spindle combo 15+ years ago. I don't use it all the time (couple times a year) but when I pull it out I'm glad I have it. It's a good unit. I also like/use the drill press drum sander due to it being convenient, easy to store and set up. They both serve their purpose.

I got a Rigid spindle sander at an auction last year. Best $40 I ever spent. 5 different diameter drums, a belt sander, and a tilting table.

I bought a used Delta spindle sander cast iron top made in the USA with its own rolling stand at a toolsale for like $100 great deal, when you buy quality tools you don't even have to consider new ones just gently used ones in good shape save you a bunch of money.

I have the Rigid (Home Depot) combination oscillating belt/spindle sander and just love it. It costs more, but you get 2 tools in one, plus it has an adjustable angle bed for chamfered edges when needed.

I got myself one this year - a combi belt and spindle sander. Triton. It arrived about two weeks ago, and I am impressed. I can see why people go on about them: you can get sand to a pencil line and nice 90-degree angles so easily.

I have the Ridgid oscillating belt/spindle sander and it definitely is a tool I'm glad I have.

I picked up a harbor freight spindle sander on sale for a little over $100 and love it. I use it even more than I thought I would when I bought it.

Also, I have the handheld wen spindle sander and it’s a good option if space is a premium. Given that the cost of the full table one right now is only about $20 more I’m not sure I would get the handheld again because I would love a bigger table, but it does clamp upside down to use like the full size machine, can also be brought to big projects, and stores in a drawer.

Built a guitar for Christmas and had to sand inside the curves for the neck. Ended up chucking up one of those drill press drum sanders into my router and used it. Worked great
