The median home price in Bozeman is currently $800-$1M. So unaffordable that the locals are leaving. Commercial businesses can’t be open regular hours because there are no workers. The west coasters have absolutely ruined our way of life here.

I’m from Colorado but spent a lot of time climbing, hiking, fishing etc. in Montana. My parents moved to Kalispell for awhile. One night in a local establishment an older local told me, “Montana is nine months of winter and three months of relatives.” I thought it was a good line with a kernel of truth.

Briggs, my wife, and I once went to Yellowstone in the fall and my wife loved it to the point that she wanted us to move there. Knowing better, I took her back in the winter, and not surprisingly, that put the kibosh on any plans to move there. I believe Montana is a beautiful state but most of the dreamers who have grand dilutions about moving there would see it the same way my wife saw Wyoming after the first winter.

Oh poor Montana. Colorado was that state about 13 years ago. Now we're fucking ruined.

I once wanted to move to Montana. Instead, I moved to Nevada (from California), and the cost of living really isn’t much better. I recently looked into Montana and realized it’s maybe even less affordable than here because of lower wages.

I live in Montana and its location is the biggest problems. For example I am looking at going to a wedding in Denver in a few weeks and the limited amount of flights drive costs up and the cheapest was 300$ for a basic ticket no bags most are 450$+ to Denver. Jobs are an issue especially if you are looking for good paying jobs that are not seasonal, especially when tech is the only one that pays well for year round jobs. Politically it really is a purple state since the last few governors were democrat and republican and there is a city that has not had a republican mayor since Calvin Coolidge was president and the new congressional district that was voted on in last Novembers election was decided by about 6, 000 votes. Housing is a problem here for what the economy can support. For example the price of a two bed apartment here in Missoula MT is about 1, 200$-1, 600$ but the jobs are only paying about 15-20$ an hour for entry level work so its not great but not the worst in the US. However I think the one thing people forget is how horrid the winters can be here. Last winter Missoula hit -27F to -38F for a week of lows my energy bill was 278$ for a 800SQ apartment for the month and that is keeping the temperature at 68-70F. Most people who move here I would say 1/3 leave after their first year because of the weather or the wages and cost of living discrepancy. It is a great place if you can handle the short comings.

In a modern era, Montana has had varying levels of popularity as a place to move since the late 80's or early 90's when the movies, "A River Runs Through It, " and, "Legends of the Fall, " came out. After watching, "A River Runs Through It, " a bunch of men in their fifties wanted to move there, put on an Indiana Jones hat and go fly fishing in the Missouri River. My dad happily moved there from Denver and lived in Helena for about seven years, and I liked going there to visit him. Helena is a really nice city with lots of nice amenities. I would not necessarily agree that the water or air are clean there.

Montana has the largest EPA Super Fund site in the U.S.(the Anoconda site). There are towns in Montana that are now uninhabitable because they are Super Fund sites. Because of the intensive mining that took place there, water, soil, and air (because of resulting dust kicked up in the air) quality can be suspect depending on where you are at. Having voiced my gripes, there are places in western Montana where I would live. It really is a beautiful place. Practically speaky, from what I've seen, you should probably bring a job because most towns don't really have that many good ones. Also, places like Montana are not for everyone. Like Wyoming, there are places there that are really isolated and that is not everyone's cup of tea. It can also get extremely cold. A huge number of the coldest temperatures ever recorded in the 48 contiguous states were recorded in the mountainous regions of Montana. Great video about a great state.

I think Montana became more popular not just because of designation, beautiful landscape and the popular outdoor activities its the Hollywood scene from well-known movies and hit TV series like Yellowstone and Big Sky that's really putting the state of Montana on the map.

Before you move to Montana, spend a week there in January, and think about the 6 months of hard winter there every year. Then decide.

Years ago I went to Bozeman on business in the springtime. I was sitting in the airport bar waiting for my flight out and remarked how gorgeous it was. The locals chuckled and said come back when the thermometer hits 20 below zero and see if I still like it.

Years ago, the CFO of my company bought land there, and then had a custom home built, before he retired. On retirement, he moved there full time. Within a year, he moved back here to California and sold his dream home. It was just far too cold for him.

I lived in Helena in 2002, the winter in MT is easier to deal with than the summer in AZ.

Montana is my dreamstate to live in. A 2A sanctuary state, beautiful places for sight seeing, a great place for people seeking peace and quiet in a solitary small town. Gotta love every bit of it!

The winter was too long for me. The natural beauty is stunning. The Southwest of Montana winter is not harsh. The snow blows off the streets and is gone in a few days.

Spent a winter there for the experience. Hit -40 a couple times but rarely was there any wind. Midwest winters are cold and the wind is always 30 to 40 mph.

I lived in Montana in the 80's when I was in the Air Force. It is a gorgeous state where you can drive for miles without seeing a house. I would love to move back there, but the cost of living is what holds me back. I would have to be one of those van dwellers!

No sales tax in Montana, but we make up the lost revenue with property taxes.

I was in Missoula from 21-22 and while I loved it and would have stayed, I could not find housing that I could afford despite having a decent teaching job. It iss crazy expensive, tech bro's are buying up all the property as investments and normal folks are being forced out.
