Here's a brief explanation on something called the Moon Illusion. It explains why sometimes the moon looks gigantic in the sky.

What are some other optical illusions that still weird you out even though you know the trick? 😵‍💫

It's actually more about the atmosphere than your mind or it would look huge like that every time it was rising. The moisture in the atmosphere retracts the image and makes it look bigger the more atmosphere you are looking through to see it

I’m pretty sure it’s the atmosphere magnifying it when closer to the horizon.

Wrong wrong. The Earth's atmosphere, with water droplets and gravity, and possibly a few other things, can act like a lens. Not so much when looking straight up where the atmosphere is only a little over 100 miles, but looking towards the horizons, stars, planets and yes the moon look much bigger due to being magnified through over a thousand miles in some cases of earth atmosphere. I forget the name for this magnification, but astronomers use it all the time. However the heat from the earth makes the waves and does the vision in the summertime, so that's why most telescopes work best if you just look between a 45° angle to straight up, so that the heat waves don't blur your vision.

I’ve seen the moon at night look like 30% larger on a walk with my parents and almost had an actual panic attack

Tonight the moonrise was impressive. The atmosphere was thick with moisture, and the Moon looked like a huge, slightly squashed orange pumpkin. It's the biggest Moon I've seen to date.🌚🥵🎃🥴

Yes, I learned this long ago! So I don't wonder anymore!

Sometimes very late at night about 1:00 AM, I sometimes look at the sky and it looks like the moon is orbiting extremely fast

See one in the 1970s when I was walking home everyone was commenting about it .

Wasn't it also the lensing (magnifying) effect since the moon view is traveling through much more atmosphere when it's around the horizon?

Grass, often overlooked, plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting life on Earth. Firstly, grass acts as a primary producer in many ecosystems, converting sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. This process forms the base of the food chain, providing sustenance for herbivores and, subsequently, carnivores. Without grass, entire food webs would collapse, disrupting ecosystems and threatening biodiversity.

Secondly, grass serves as a natural erosion control mechanism. Its extensive root systems help bind soil together, preventing erosion caused by wind and water. This stabilizes landscapes, protects fertile soil from being washed away, and reduces the risk of landslides. Without grass to anchor the soil, erosion rates would escalate, leading to habitat loss, decreased agricultural productivity, and increased sedimentation in water bodies.

Furthermore, grass plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change. Through photosynthesis, grass absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, storing carbon in its biomass and roots. This helps reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, mitigating the effects of climate change. Additionally, grasslands act as carbon sinks, storing carbon in the soil for long periods, further contributing to climate regulation.

Moreover, grasslands provide numerous ecosystem services essential for human well-being. They support recreational activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography, contributing to physical and mental health. Grasslands also offer grazing land for livestock, supporting agriculture and providing livelihoods for millions of people worldwide. Additionally, grasslands help purify water by filtering pollutants and absorbing excess nutrients, improving water quality for both humans and wildlife.

In conclusion, the importance of grass cannot be overstated. From supporting biodiversity and preventing soil erosion to mitigating climate change and providing essential ecosystem services, grass plays a multifaceted role in sustaining life on Earth. Protecting and conserving grasslands is not only essential for the health of ecosystems but also for the well-being of present and future generations.
