My brother moved to Tampa in 2012. I was still stuck in Ohio. I couldn’t WAIT to move to Tampa. As much as I hate snow and cold I was desperate to get out. I was even jealous of the homeless people in Tampa. We finally moved to Tampa in 2017 and I couldn’t be any happier. This city is the BOMB! Never bored and there’s ALWAYS something to do. Comedy shows, concerts, beaches, clubs, casino, museums, aquarium, zoo and amusement parks. It’s nearly endless. Everything is here. We mainly moved for the weather. Nothing beats an 85° day in the middle of fall and spring. Best thing about living here is I don’t need an ice scraper nor do I need to shovel heat.
Driving with the top down is the BEST and I find it “criminal” to drive around on a cloudless sunny day with 80° temps and all windows up. Waste of an enjoyable drive. And if someone is living in Tampa and they are bored then the problem is with them, not the city.

Did a summer internship there in 2018 and was blown away by how much I loved the city and just Florida in general. I’m currently living near LA but plan to move to Tampa in a year or so! ❤

Honest opinion: Tampa is okay. That’s it. Once you get over the initial touristy things to do, it’s nothing new. Been down here thirteen years and outside of the Riverwalk, some breweries and countless new restaurants that come and go, there is nothing to do. Ikea is packed on the weekends when it’s hot because it’s just not enough to do on a super hot day besides shop or eat. Hardly any decent museums. If your used to good shopping and edgy style and fashion like up north or LA, this is not your place. Pinellas doesnt offer much either including St Pete. It’s just okay. The only reason Tampa has gotten the hype it has is because of Tom Brady and this massive push for tourism on social media. I see people come down all the time and it’s cool the first year, but after that, it’s like meh. I personally enjoy the Orlando Metro area better as they have more eclectic neighborhoods with things to do and with more of an identity. Ybor and South Tampa is all you have and even they still have a way to go. Jobs overall do not pay well. So if you lose your cushy job you came down here with or are remote, the chances are you will not be able to replace it quickly and may have to move because there are not a lot of corporations based here. It’s more like small satellite offices. And unemployment max is $275 a WEEK, and the max claim per YEAR is $3800. That’s it. Lastly, people move down here for the beaches but don’t understand that if you choose places like Wesley Chapel or Lutz, etc., that’s 1.5 hr trip to the beaches one way. I don’t really bother to go anymore because I can’t stand having to navigate through the massive amounts of tourist or traffic downtown both ways. Just want to give REAL perspective to people considering it.

Productive people are flooding out of California---But they still want Sun & Sea. What are the 3 options? .. Florida, Florida & Florida.

I am a true Floridian born and raised in Daytona Beach. But I've lived in 4 states. Seattle, Atlanta, S.C. Colombia, and Virginia, Norfolk. Well if I decide to ever leave Florida it will be Virginia but I don't think it will ever be in the plan I am settling down and moving to Tampa soon I like Tampa and there are lots to do there. So long story short I've been to so many states throughout the world but I always have bounce back to my homework. And again there is no perfect state /country in the world 🌎 its always gonna have its problems somewhere in that place.

Thanks for the pep talk. You said the big key word here, "affordable". I gave up trying to find an affordable yet livable house in the Tampa area.

I bet more people than not are like me; we can't afford the affordable 300K home. I can only go as high as 150K because that's what I can get out of my house. Maybe 175K but that's pushing it. Unless there is a hidden area 30-60 minutes away from Tampa. I can give it one more try maybe I'll get lucky.

And don't forget the cost of living and ammenities.

New laws go into effect next year for Condos in FL that will make HOA extremely expensive, in general higher insurance as well for single family homes. Please do thorough research before planning to move

Looks like heaven compared to California.

There needs to be more emphasis on how incredibly expensive it is to live here now. If you don't make $135K or more, then you can't afford to live here. It's that simple.

I've been here about 45 years and while I still love it, housing costs are out of sight and out of reach for the average resident. You better have about $100, 000 a year income before you live here. Mortgage payments and rents have skyrocketed in the last few years. You may have to live in the outskirts like Riverview if you don't have an upper middle class income.

What about low income section 8 housing? I am on a budget but don’t want to move somewhere dangerous

I live on social security and have been priced out of the rental market. I now live on the outskirts of Tampa but will have to buy a travel trailer 😏
