Wow I was literally just looking up how to hunt/breed shinies an hour ago on YouTube. Austin John coming in to save the day with the convenient Info once again!

After doing the battle combo I can answer that question:
- You can save and sleep your game but don't turn off the game (it will break the chain)
- Don't fight any other pokemon other than the one you're hunting
- running away from an accidental encounter will still keep the chain and will not break it
