It could just be me, but with the slide locked back, the Beretta 92 is the sweetest looking handgun on the planet. My Holy Grail of handguns. This movie, along with Die Hard, made me fall in love with this handgun.

What a lot of younger people don't realize about this scene is high capacity handguns were quite rare for cops to carry in this era. The Beretta is part of what is supposed to make Mel Gibson's character a little crazy. The scene is set to show just how many shots the weapon can fire.
