Big Trucks Big Lies: Manipulated To Go Broke

America has been brainwashed into buying oversized, inefficient trucks, and the numbers prove it. Over the last decade, small sedans and hatchbacks like the Mazda 3—one of the most reliable, affordable, and fun-to-drive cars on the market—have seen their sales plummet. The Mazda 3 alone has lost 80% of its sales in just 10 years. Why? Because trucks like the Ford F-250, Chevy Silverado 2500, Ram 2500, and GMC Sierra 2500 dominate the market thanks to government tax loopholes that reward vehicles over 6,000 pounds gross weight.

Meanwhile, regular trucks like the Ford F-150 are more popular than ever, and sedans have all but died off. These oversized vehicles are being marketed as status symbols, but the reality is they’re expensive, inefficient, and completely unnecessary for most drivers. Here’s the cost of this cultural shift:
• Rising vehicle prices making it harder for families to afford reliable transportation.
• Increased traffic congestion and safety risks on our roads.
• Worsening fuel efficiency and higher carbon emissions.

If we want to see affordable, efficient cars like the Mazda 3 thrive again, we need to act. The solution starts with our wallets: buying smarter, smaller vehicles. And it ends with demanding an end to tax breaks for oversized trucks that encourage automakers to prioritize profit over practicality.

See HD trucks all the time "Platinum" editions never a load in them, never a trailer pulled, no work racks, no snowplows. A 6.7L grocery getter. Silliness at its best

I can't wait to get into a 100k Ford with 28% I interest for 400 months. Might as well start sleeping on the sidewalk.

Some of us are old enough to remember the late 70's. Chrysler for example said 'Americans want big cars'. Then the Japanese almost killed the big 3. Then came the small cheap economy car of the 80's. History will repeat itself.

Everytime I see one of these giant brand new trucks I chuckle to myself thinking about how moronic the person driving must be to pay so much for a stinkin pickup truck.😂

When I was young, I was brainwashed and wanted a Ram 1500 because of the ads. But after getting my first vehicle, which was a 2004 F-150. I realized a truck wasn't for me. Parking, gas, it was big, and I didn't do much truck things with it. My 2nd and current car is a 2015 Camry Hybrid, and let me tell you, it's a huge blessing for me. It saves me on gas, and parking is good. It's a shame that Chevy and Ford discontinued the Fusion and Malibu.

had an f-150 for 9 years. low mileage, 74k miles before it gave up the ghost. it wouldn't start one day and after checking battery, had it towed to my local ford dealership. i used that dealership for 7 years for scheduled maintenance. it sat on the lot for 5 weeks and they were never going to work on it. this is in a town where trucks are very popular and i was fine for paying for repairs, but they couldn't even get a mechanic to look at it for diagnostics and an estimate. i eventually talked to the toyota dealer service manager and he said in passing, "we would never let a customer have a truck with us that long without doing the work." i had the truck towed to him and eventually used as a trade-in for a toyota. the f-150 was not heavily used -- i got it mostly to do some towing of a large mower and hauling. didn't do much of either. the f-150 had to be towed years before when the engine overheated. apparently a gasket seal was defective and the dealer charged me $110 to replace since it was not under warranty. i'm still flabbergasted that an f-150 with low mileage and not much wear couldn't get basic service. my brother had the same issue with his f-150 -- it was one with a nice trim package. a/c went TU and the dealer wanted to charge 2100 to remove the front console/dashboard to replace an issue that had been reported in the forums. i've always been a honda/toyota man and i will never, ever buy another american owned piece of shit ever again. toyota is already heading down the tubes as well. it's so sad that small bare bones pickup like we had in the 80s and 90s is just off the table and all we have are these stupid vehicles that normal hardworking people cannot afford. i make a good income and am blessed. totally shocked at what i had to pay to get my toyota. it feels like the system is trying to end car ownership altogether through incompetence, greed and malice. american car companies will get bailed out again for stupid shit like the lightening which i knew was going to be an epic fail

I am socially engineered to buy a lightweight 2 door truck with a long bed. But the auto lobbyists did their best to make them illegal so I will just get a motorcycle and rent a U-Haul when I buy something large. Eff the automakers.

I need to haul 4'×8' sheets or 4'x10' sheets of plastic.. I need an 8' bed, and cant afford one, because they're priced at 300% their actual value.

So yes.. some of us DO need the big truck, that allegedly "tears up the road, and is bad for the environment"...

We have a small horse ranch in Montana and need two full-size pickups. The F-150 is a great highway vehicle (23 mpg) and can carry light cargo, and the F-250 can handle any of our five different trailers. It is the real workhorse of the ranch. No use for a car.

I totally agree with you. The Mazda brand is really good quality built vehicles, and in particular the Mazda 3. And the Road manners and handling is way superior to any Pick Up Truck or SUV. But people just wants these "Tanks" to show off, or sit higher, which gives them the perception of being more secure, but the Crash tests tells another story. The sad story of these compact Sedans / Hatchbacks is that they are slowly but surely being phased out due to poor sales.

Mazda may offer something affordable but the sedan makers honda, kia and toyota are notorious price gougers too.

I didn’t realize they had the Mazda 3 with a manual. It’s going to have to go on the short list.

Those little cars are awesome but not very safe when one of those big trucks hit you

Mazda build quality is excellent too. I wish they would make a small pick up for US market. They would crush it.

I can relate to the idea of buying a Mazda 3. I'm considering one of those. I have a 2019 Toyota Yaris (Mazda 2), 6 speed stick. Nice interior for the price, comfortable, great mpg. Road noise a little loud. Advertised as 31 city/39 hwy. In reality, I get 45 mpg to and from my shop up and down hills. On a trip it's around 50 mpg at 60 mph or lower. With Sumitomo Ice Edge tires, it's handles exceedingly well in snow. At 106 hp, it's a little under powered, but it's a tradeoff for mpg. Now at 86, 000 miles, it has been a solid car. It's no longer available new in US after 2020 due to poor sales, and Mazda 2's aren't sold in US either.
