Some of the big political effects resulting from the Protestant Reformation, which are touched upon here, is the rise of nationalism and the idea of national sovereignty (with national sovereignty being secured with the treaty of Westphalia), freedom of religion etc. Not to mention that the idea of mass literacy basically started with the Reformers because they believed that everybody should be able to read the Bible.

Wait a minute! Luther did not print the first bible in German. The inventor of the movable type printing press, Gutenberg, was the one who did that.

Well, not quite my friend. The Church's princes were, in large part, corrupt in terms of their behavior, but the doctrines were still sound. Hence, Luther erred by displacing the truth with error. He should have warred against men rather than the truth. Yes, he was right to complain about the abuse of indulgences, but that hardly justifies starting a new religion based on his own personal whim.

For one thing, we are not saved by "faith alone." As St. James pointed out, "faith without works is dead". Luther didn't like that part of Scripture, so he just tore it out. Rather than deal with this passage, he simply eliminated the entire book of James. Just for good measure he also threw out seven of the middle books, such as Maccabees l and II in order to avoid the indirect references to Purgatory. Not cool.

Among other things, Luther's insane idea was that anyone and everyone can interpret the bible according to his own subjective opinions. We all know the result: Instead of having one, unified Church, we are left with 30, 000 protestant denominations, each one preaching its own road to salvation. Even less cool.

Indeed, without the Catholic Church and the biblical canons, we wouldn't even know which of the ancient books belong in the bible. The Church has that authority because Christ said so: "I will give you the keys to the kingdom." Without authority, all is lost. If everyone gets to make up his own bible, he will eliminate those very same books that contain hard truths that many of us would like to avoid.

Even today, we still have many corrupt bishops and cardinals, but they are corrupt because they have lost the faith and fail to live up to (or teach) the truths that have been passed down to them. In many cases, they teach political correctness in the name of Catholicism. They will be held accountable for their treason in the next life.
