Rick Steves' Europe © 2016 | Five hundred years ago, Martin Luther kicked off the Protestant Reformation, which contributed to the birth of our modern age. In this one-hour special — filmed on location in Europe — Rick Steves tells the story of a humble monk who lived a dramatic life. Rick visits key sites relating to the Reformation (including Erfurt, Wittenberg, and Rome) and explores the complicated political world of 16th-century Europe — from indulgences to iconoclasts, and from the printing press to the Counter-Reformation. It’s a story of power, rebellion, and faith that you’ll never forget. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #martinluther

I laughed "that societies earn freedom as they evolved". That is the very opposite of what I see happening today. The story of Luther trying to end avarice and corruption is a noble cause. He would be turning in his grave if he were aware of the corruption that now envelops every walk of life today. How far we have fallen.

A masterwork, Mr. Steves. The depth and breadth of your commentary illustrates and motivates the arc of human civilization. You are so far beyond being just a great tour guide pointing out the sights.

His presentation is a bit one sided. It’s as if everything before Luther was simply an abyss of ignorance and superstition, outright nonsense that has been spread by the intellectual class for hundreds of years.

The Catholic Church is the foundational bedrock of Western Civilization, which enabled the West to survive the fall of classical civilization. For all its faults, the Catholic Church gave us our understanding of philosophy, art, literature, government, theology, and most importantly science.

Luther was a brilliant mind, but he was known for his viciousness towards anyone who didn’t share his religious views. He was also deeply conflicted and neurotic.

What a wonderful documentary, we are deeply indebted to you Rick Steve's. This documentary should be preserved for posterity for the young people to know how religious freedom obtained. Yes a painstaking amount of hard work and research went to make this audio visual splendor. Finally we want more

televangelists are the new paddlers of indulgences known today as the gospel of prosperity that prospered the pastors and televangelists
and left the members ten percent poorer each month

Absolutely fabulous narrative . I truly admire Martin Luther. He stuck to his convictions in spite of powerful opposition and opened a totally new chapter in our understanding and practice of Christianity . Brave man.

I'm not good at apologetics, but I would love to see Taylor Marshall debate this guy on how wonderful Luther was. He even added the word Alone to faith until even his own supporters took exception.

He was great in many ways, he exposed the Catholics, the only failure was he didn't go back to the true Sabbath, which is Saturday, that's when Jesus went.

Another great video, Rick. I wish I'd have had you as my history teacher in school. Strange though, that I have missed this video for four years.
