Cold communicated with Woody telepathically, and the two went on to be lifelong friends. Other people close to Woody, including family, friends, and even his therapist claimed that they, too, had experiences with Indrid Cold. Woody wrote and published a detailed account of his experiences, and never went back on his story. Since the 1960s, the legend of Indrid Cold has become one of the most famous in all of UFO lore. Taken at face value, this story sounds strange. But the real story is even stranger.

My thought is that they studied humans a bit before making contact. They observed that "smiling" is generally a gesture of good will. Maybe they tried to duplicate this, and utterly failed... 😂

I wonder if Indrid was smiling because their species saw on Earth saw people smiling as a form of courtesy and friendliness, so they tried to do that, without grasping how unsettling it was.

My wife is actually related to the guy that talked to indrid cold here in west Virginia hes her great uncle. My wife an i lived in the house that they interviewed him in we would hear something walking around the house our plates would get smashed in the middle of the night ect. The whole family said that he was a very honest person when he told this story he looked like he was telling the truth.

My late husband was 5 or 6 cars back waiting to get on the Silver Bridge the evening it fell. His father was a salesman/truck driver just driving them home. I remember in the early 2000’s my husband showed his dad the scene in The Mothman Prophecies when it happened. His dad (in his 80’s) got completely shook up and left the room.

Maybe beings like this are unnerving because they aren't on the same "wavelength" that we are? Kinda like if you're favorite radio station is 99.5 but if you tune to 99.3 it doesn't fully come in. Also as a species we aren't very mature so encountering "others" would be very spooky.

Indrid Cold is fascinating because sightings of the smiling man are paired with other phenomena in the area. The Smiling Man is most notably paired with sightings of the Mothman in West Virginia. There have been other sightings of the smiling man associated with UFO activity which are not as widely known as Mr. Derenberger's account.
