I learned all this when I was a kid, in a book written by Anatoly Karpov (one of my favorite players, with Aron Nimzowitch).
A pawn is the unit of value, always worth 1.
A knight and a bishop are both worth 3 pawns. But a knight is more useful in early game and a bishop more useful in late game. We can argue, since a queen is worth 10 in this system, that knights and bishop are worth 3.33 pawns.
A tower is worth 5 pawns, that's arguable.
And a queen is worth 10 pawns, or 2 towers, or three bishops.

Of course, this evaluation is a crude tool compared to position: a tower you don't use is worth zero, a double pawn is a handicap because it opens a column and expose you to attacks and should get a negative score, a knight you placed at exactly the right square to limit the moves of your opponent is better than a rook.

King’s value cannot be represented x^0 is one, because it’s 1 times x(exponent) but anything to the zero power is 1 because instead of x(zero) it’s x(the absence of value)
