I have build an atmega328p ZIF socket board myself long time ago, it is very handy indeed

very handy, but since it is possible to program the atmega in-circuit it would be less effort if one uses a SPI breakout board. I reckon this would be a flawless solution for multiple flashing if the final code already exists.

Just perfect ! I guess many of us were looking out for something like this !

I saw that shield online from your links. Nice. I notched the corner of a plain Zif socket and pressed in my own. It does interfere with the ICSP socket however. Female header with extra long legs gets around the interference. October 2019.

I've had a zip socket on one of my Arduino boards for a few years now. I program it, then just connect the most basic support devices to make it work. I'm using a 20MHz crystal to drive it. As much as I like the ATmega328. The cost of a esp8266 mini d1 makes the ATmega328 2nd or 3rd on my list for a choice of microcontrollers. Prices for the chips have skyrocketed. However the Arduino Nano clones can be a viable option.
