Intel Core i7-6700K: Overclocking Benchmark Review

There was a lot of hype around Intel's pending Skylake release, but we were a little underwhelmed by the standard clock performance. Thankfully, the 6700K seems to overclock rather well! Check it out in this video.

VIDEO INDEX

Great video! I would still say its not worth it though. Ill upgrade to a 6960x with 8 cores at 4.2GHz and a 5.2GHZ OC if that ever exists.

I recently built a new system with the Core -i7-6700k, Asus Z170-AR, one 8GB stick of DDR4 ram on Win7. Was a great time for me to upgrade to a better system - due to the many system architecture improvements - DDR4, USB 3.1, PCIe 3, SATA 3, M.2! Very happy with it, but like my old system, I'm finding that due to my light PC use, (just web, email, Music, and Word), it's overkill for me, as it is likely for many casual PC users. Have the CPU and ram gadgets to monitor their use. CPU commonly at just 3% and ram 1/3 used! Haven't overclocked it (yet) and hope I can get it up to 4.8 - but again, that would be just for fun - and certainly not needed. My old PC - 6 1/2 years old, is a Core 2 Quad - Q6600 on an ancient Socket 775, DDR2. It is also a 4-core CPU, but without the hyper-threading. On both of my systems, the slowest component are my hard drives. When the holidays are over, prices are down, sizes up, and I have the $, I must get a SSD drive to speed programs up even more.

Awesome video! Just curious, what was the voltage the 6700K was running at on 4.8GHz under load?

Finally a vid on overclocking the 6700k
How does the benchmark compare to the 4790k overclocked?

Love the i7 6700K, my other system has i7 3930k running @ 4.0 Sweet! Air Cooled.

You must have a bad 4790K.  Mine clocks to 4.8Ghz.  So I wonder if Skylake is worth the upgrade.

Now the video is up, could you try and put a bit more effort into another overlock? If that chip can reach 5ghz then I will probably buy one. I'm still running a c2q 9400 lol.

Next time, you should show the overclocked score for the counterpart cpu/gpu.

4, 8Ghz - 0, 696volt not impossible :), please update BIOS :) 5Ghz = 1, 536 volt (msi motherboard m5)

I7 6700k, Z170A pro carbon here.
What would be the best settings for UV/OC?

Can a 6700k be overclocked to 5.0 Ghz and remain stable under a decent liquid cooler? I love round figure.

just want to ask if 1.345V dangerous in the long run? Thank you for your time.

what Ram memory did you use? mine are 3000MHz but it shows 1500 MHz on DRAM Frequency...
The NB Frequency is the same at 4000MHz.

You either have a very cheap board for your 4790k, or you didn't win the silicon lottery. My 1st 4790k hit 4.7 Ghz with 1.31 volts and my 2nd 4790k hit 4.7 Ghz with 1.28 volts. I didn't try to overclock either CPU past 4.7 Ghz, but I'm pretty sure that my current CPU could easily hit 4.8 Ghz.

they claim you can get 6700k BCLK up to 400mhz and multiplier to 13 to reach a 5.2ghz would like to see someone try it

you see that the i7 6700k have more potential for oc so im going with skylake

I can't keep a stable 4.5 ghz on the 6700K at 1.345 volts is there a problem?

Dang!  This will be my new build.  Was the 4790K OC'd to 4.8?

According to most reviews you got lucky with the CPU selection as the average OC across CPU samples to date looks to be just 4.5Gz. One reviewer commented that it looks like half the users will get 4.5K and the number of good CPU's appear to drop of pretty fast after 4.6Ghz describing 4.8 as rare samples... So if we looked at stock performance it appears the older 4970K beats Skylake in a fair number of those tests you ran. Id say that's a pretty bad effort by Intel and not very good value for anyone with an i7 or quick i5 based PC less than 3 or 4 years old....
