I’d say extinction level events, which have happened at least five times in our history, aren’t exactly rare. If something twenty kilometers wide was hurtling towards us we’re screwed. We will get struck by another some day so that’s one reason I’ve always supported space exploration and building new technologies to travel beyond our earth.
