From Mouth to Muscle: How Your Body Absorbs Protein

____

In this video, Jonathan from the Institute of Human Anatomy explains how your body absorbs protein. He discusses the differences between digestion and absorption, and how certain segments of the digestive system participate in these processes, as well as how this influences the type, amount, and distribution of the protein throughout the body. Does the timing and the type of protein even matter? It should be a fun one!

I'm glad you pointed out where the stomach is because when people hold on to their abdomen they don't know they have a gut issue, they keep blaming their stomach

00:00 Introduction to Protein Digestion and Absorption

• Protein digestion and absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.
• The importance of understanding the process to control protein intake.
• Recommendations for timing and amount of protein intake.

00:49 Oral Digestion

• Food is digested mechanically and chemically in the oral cavity.
• Examples: chewing, salivation, sublingual medications.
• Protein digestion in the oral cavity depends on the type of food.

02:03 Stomach Digestion

• The stomach as a site of protein digestion.
• Hydrochloric acid and pepsin for denaturation and breakdown of proteins.
• Chyme and its role in digestion.

03:56 Pyloric Sphincter and Small Intestine

• The pyloric sphincter regulates the entry of food into the small intestine.
• The small intestine is divided into three segments: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
• The duodenum connects to the bile duct and pancreas.

06:37 The difference between proteins, peptides, and amino acids

• The importance of understanding the differences between proteins, peptides, and amino acids.
• Amino acids as building blocks of proteins.
• Peptides and polypeptides as intermediates in protein digestion.

09:07 Absorption in the small intestine

• The small intestine as the main site of absorption.
• Length and surface area of the small intestine.
• Circular folds of the mucosa to increase the surface area for absorption.

10:10 Amino acid absorption

• Microvilli in the intestinal folds increase the surface area for absorption.
• The mesentery contains blood vessels that absorb nutrients, including amino acids.
• Amino acids move from the intestinal lumen into the cells of the mucosa, where they are broken down into amino acids.

11:34 The Role of the Liver in Amino Acid Control

• The liver plays a key role in controlling the intake of amino acids.
• More than 50% of ingested amino acids are utilized by the liver, with the remainder released into the systemic circulation.
• Amino acids are used to create plasma proteins and other important proteins, as well as for energy.

12:17 How Protein Type Affects the Body

• The body has no control over where amino acids are sent.
• The liver uses more than 50% of amino acids to create proteins and for energy.
• It is important to consume enough protein to achieve nitrogen balance.

13:53 Nitrogen Balance

• Nitrogen balance is the difference between nitrogen intake and nitrogen loss.
• A positive nitrogen balance promotes muscle growth.
• The type of protein is important, but maintaining a positive nitrogen balance is most important.

14:35 Complete vs. Incomplete Proteins

• Animal proteins like whey and casein contain all the essential amino acids.
• Plant proteins can be incomplete due to the lack of certain amino acids.
• It is important to get all the essential amino acids from a variety of sources.

15:32 Protein Digestion Rate

• Fast-digesting proteins like whey protein are important for post-workout recovery.
• The optimal amount of protein depends on your goals and can range from 1.2 to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight.
• It is important to maintain a positive nitrogen balance for 24 hours.

If I had access to this channel growing up, I probably would have had so much more interested in Biology. So informative! Thank you.

Definitely want more digestion videos, this is great. Especially want more detailed explanation of what goes on in the intestinal cells, stomach lining, etc. how long different things take to absorb, how long different foods spend in the stomach and why, etc.

On protein requirements, I’d like to see a deep dive on the difference between the requirement for muscle maintenance versus during a period of active synthesis during a building phase. I rarely see this specific aspect focused on in the usual videos on protein intake.

11:30 Liver’s huge role
13:30 *Eat enough protein for nitrogen balance*
14:30 Complete (animal) proteins > incomplete (plant) proteins

15:00 Thing to note is that nowadays, most plant protein powders are a blend of brown rice and pea protein or hemp etc... Which makes a complete protein because one makes up for the lack of the other

Amino acids are the very first thing I suggest to newbies when asked how I’ve been able to build muscle. That said it’s important to know that emerging science is suggesting that amino acids can also fuel the growth of cancer. Though it’s a complex subject it would be really interesting to hear the IOHA’s take on which aminos to use and which ones to avoid for people who have cancer. ❤️💪🏼😎👍🏼❤️

Speaking on polypeptides, it would be great if you could do a video on the various polypeptides such as BPC-157 and TB-500. Explaining how they're broken down in the body, Mechanism of action, etc.
