Budapest Won BEST Christmas Market in Europe

Welcome to Budapest the capital city of Hungary in Eastern Europe. This city knows how to do Christmas and especially Christmas markets and this is probably why they keep winning best Christmas market in Europe year after year. In fact, the Budapest Advent Feast Christmas Market located in front of the St Stephen Basilican won this award four time in a row including for the 2024 Holiday season.

Our Christmas market exploration started at the Vörösmarty Tér or Voromarty Square Christmas Market where they had more street food than we had even seen in any other market in Europe. From Hungarian goulash to gluhwein, lángos and töltött káposzta (cabbage roll) they really have it all. We tasted a little bit of everything and it was all so delicious and loaded with paprika of course!

From there, we walked to the Advent Fest Basilica Christmas market, this is the one that keep winning Best Christmas market in Europe year after year and it is well deserved. First of all the light show that happens every 30 minutes on the St Stephen Basilica is beautiful and truly adds to the ambiance of the holiday market. Do no miss the kürtőskalács or famous chimney cake which is a true delicacy here in Hungary. Otherwise, the live music, Christmas decors and wide variety of Christmas food and gifts this market was truly magical!

I used to work on a river cruise ship on the Danube. I visited all the Christmas markets on the way up to Nurnberg. When we got to Nurnberg, which I was really looking forward to, I got disappointed, as the Hungarian one was much nicer, but its fame and reputation is/was unequally treated. Finally the world recognised that it's the best one 🥰.

Having lived in several countries between England and Switzerland, food doesn’t get better than in Hungary- so missed my country’s food, especially Spinach fôzelék, vegetable stews, rakott, layered baked food etc.
