M1 Ultra vs RTX 3090 in a Nutshell

Apple recently revealed their brand new M1 Ultra Chip, although it is very powerful in every aspect. I had my inital doubts when they claimed in their event that the GPU performance was better than Nvidia RTX 3090, now a few days after it's release, the benchmarks are out and as you can clearly see, The RTX 3090 smokes The M1 Ultra Chip. So I made this meme to represent how the situation is right now with Apple. #M1Ultra #RTX3090

They could have just compared it to an RTX 3070 and people would still have been impressed.
But no, they just had to go for the 3090.

Note how Apple only mentioned power consumption. The M1 is more efficient, but the 3090 peaks its performance way higher, and I don't think gamers care all that much about lowering power consumption on GPUs. Apple basically cut off the rest of the graph.

Note that the y-axis is called 'Relative performance' - So they took performance (in score of a favorable benchmark) / anything they could find that makes the dGPUs look bad and plotted it against power draw

I can only assume they meant something along the lines of: The M1 Ultra at its peak performance has greater performance than the RTX 3090 in terms of power consumption.

While the M1 Ultra is really impressive given that it's a full SOC, Apple's claims are beyond ridiculous and make them look stupid. Saying it had 3070 level performance would have still raised eyebrows and would have been true.

I think these energy-efficient ‘high-end’ chips are good but not effective for targeting their specific market. People who bought high-end computer know that energy shouldn’t be an issue and they want as much power as they could. It’s different for the M1 Macbook Air because people who bought it wants battery life and light tasks

I feel like a really good undervolted RX 6900XT might be able to go below 200w with similar performance to stock. Many on reddit have reported this. The RTX 3090 is one the most power-hungry GPU's, so Apple picked RTx 3090 to just show how efficient they are, instead of comapring it to another efficient GPU.
