That Which Has Come Before:
palms up and weighted with salt
i watch my hands
shake gently in front of me.
i can feel every scar,
every raised petal of skin
to open itself
against the night.
and after everything,
this soft tremble
is all that remains of the past,
but i would like to be still.
at least enough
to hold something delicate.
if i tell you of history
is it too late to change it?
i have been carving memories
from bone for too long,
sharpening the air
into every word i can use
to go back, even if
it's the only place
i don't want to be.
to write is destroy
what has come before,
to build a home
of corpses.
they say we can transform pain
into something beautiful,
but how can anything so tender
ever be seen as ugly?
