I think it’s important to emphasize that if you are participating in the history/culture of a country while physically in that country you’re not really appropriating period unless it’s the oppressive class profiting off your participation and/or it’s been explicitly stated that foreigners should not participate by locals. (E.g. the stairs to heaven, the locals have explicitly stated that those stairs are off limits)

I absolutely believe in the fact that you can trigger feelings or moments from people who died. I visited an island named Spinalonga in Crete and I swear to you, I felt emotions not my own and smelt the sicknesses that resided there. I'd love to see what kind of feelings and memories I'd witness there!

Actually if you go to other countries they will be over joyed to see foreigners wear their cultural clothes. Because there it is a sign of appreciation. Because you wear their because you love the cloth and the culture. I am originally from Africa and was surprised to see how much Americans react whenever someone one where other people’s cultural clothing or anything. I saw how this offended for other countries run through for sure.

Here’s my thing. If I am in a place and the locals encourage dressing up- of course I will. It’s all part of experiencing their culture. If I’m in a place and it’s known they don’t like it- I won’t.
People in the internet will always have something to say- but they weren’t there in that moment. I saw a post a while ago about a little white girly dressed in Balinese (I believe) traditional dress. People were so angry online like “how dare she! That’s appropriation!” Turns out she is half Balinese, had lived there her whole life, and was preparing for a festival.
It puts me off sharing things. But yes, I would and I’m sure I’d have a lovely time.

Ps. Good to know I can’t walk in a straight line to save my life!

Omg I did this too! My costume was actually really similar to yours, lol. It was cheap, fun, and an amazing memory! There were also a lot of clothes to pick from, both male and female, the makeup was so high quality, and the people working there + our photographer were so nice! 10/10!!

as somebody who is Taiwanese i went there, rented a dress and got my makeup and hair done and i got so many compliments :) 100% recommend
