Venice is a north-eastern city of Italy. Made up of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by 400 bridges, the city is renowned for the beauty of its settings, architecture, and artwork.
Also known as the “City of Masks”, Venice has a long history of mask making with its artisans enjoying a special position in society. The Carnival of Venice, an annual festival held in spring, is world famous for its elaborate masks ️🎭 and colourful costumes. Check out the (very beautiful!) YouTube video below from the 2016 carnival!
Murano, 1.5 kilometres north of Venice, is a set of islands famous for glass making. As a fire safety measure, to protect the mostly wooden buildings in Venice, glassmakers were ordered to move their operations to Murano in 1921. There, the technique to produce high-quality glass was kept a trade secret; until the end of the 16th century when it was leaked to many other European countries.
