Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung condition characterized by the abnormal widening of the bronchi due to inflammation or infection. There are several types of bronchiectasis, which can be classified based on their anatomical characteristics:
Types of Bronchiectasis
Cylindrical Bronchiectasis: This is the most common form, where the bronchi are uniformly dilated, resembling a tube. The airways lose their normal tapering shape but maintain a cylindrical appearance.
Varicose Bronchiectasis: In this type, the bronchi exhibit irregular dilations and constrictions, resembling varicose veins. This leads to a beaded appearance and increased mucus production.
Cystic Bronchiectasis: Also known as saccular bronchiectasis, this is the most severe form. It features the formation of cysts or fluid-filled cavities within the bronchi, giving a honeycomb-like appearance on imaging.
