Bronchiectasis - Pathophysiology

Bronchiectasis is a type of obstructive pulmonary disease in which there is chronic permanent dilatation of bronchioles due to or associated with chronic infections, cystic fibrosis and kartagener syndrome that cause the destruction of airway walls.

In the United States, the most common cause of bronchiectasis is cystic fibrosis and worldwide it is tuberculosis.

Dr.Mobeen Syed in this video discusses how cystic fibrosis causes bronchiectasis. He explains that, due to the mutation in the CFTR gene, chloride extrusion stops. Thick viscous secretion becomes obstructive for the mucociliary elevator to work properly that causes bronchiectasis.
