Former President Duterte empowered China by signing a Joint Venture Agreement that nullify a UN court decision won in 2016 regarding control on the islands of the West Philippine Seas.
That UN decision was from a 2012 case filed by Duterte's political enemy the Dilawans. Duterte was ignorant to the fact that said case was anchored from an original Case filed by former President Marcos Sr. in the 1970's.
Duterte took Chinas 450 billion US dollar loan/finance deal for his build3x projects that are mostly aimed for aesthetic and beautification for tourism rather than agriculture and industry.
In 2016 Duterte announced the re alignment of the Philippines from Allied (USA and western allies) to Axis China, Russia and North Korea. That is unbelievably true and you can google it.
He even propose a deal where Philippine will be granted a status equivalent to a Chinese province. When it back fired he said he was only joking.
Present President Marcos Jr. now is repairing the damage done by stupid former President Duterte on US Allied Philippine relation.

Before Duterte, Philippines hosted US naval bases which is a threat to China. That's when China started to plan its defence strategy and one of them is to claim South China Sea to build its defence frontline on the outlying islands, islets and reefs. The US started it all by surrounding China with military bases and carriers.

During Duterte time, he kicked off all the bases, unwilling to be a US stooge anymore, until Marcos Jr. came along. That's when the US can now influenced Philippines to let it build naval bases again and instigated Philippines to rachet up the confrontation with China. I'm wondering what will happen to the Philippines when the US threw it under the bus in future!
