If I could remember my history as a seven year old, as Columbus was approaching Trinidad he saw the three mountains and it remained him of the Trinity. Father, Son and Holy Ghost and he named out Blessed island Trinidad.

Why not name it Trinibago?
Edit:I realise that locals actually call it Trinbago, sry for being stupid I just figured that a combined name wasn't in use since Name explain didn't mention it.

Equally, why does Sao Tomé and Principe have two parts in its name? Likewise for St Kitts & Nevis and St Vincent & the Grenadines.

There are lots of Caribbean countries that consist of two main islands with the official name of the country being "[X] and [Y]", X being island #1 and Y being island #2. Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts and Nevis are two more.

Trinidad always in everything. (Local saying)
Well done video however the part about naming of Trinidad is inaccurate. Columbus approached the island from the south and saw the island's Southern Mountain Range with its distinct 3 hills and as a result of being catholic named the island La Trinity in honor of the Holy Trinity. Tobago was named after its many Tobacco Plantations during the colonial era.

Also we learnt in school that due to the Southern Mountain range when Colombus passed he saw three mountains which reminded him of the Trinity and that is why he named it after the Trinity.

Met someone from Trinidad AND Tobago and asked them this question and was told to google it. So instead of having a genuine conversation with someone, here I am.

Haven't heard the name "Holy Ghost" for years - usually Holy Spirit is used nowadays

Thats my home country. It seems you missed a bit of information. In history books and classes they thought us Trinidad got its name when Columbus saw three mountains in the southern coast of the the island.

the only reason Trinidad not separate is because the queen thinks Tobago cannot stand on there so she tie both islands together instead of giving Trinidad independent and let Tobago be a British territory
