Wow! Although I was a baby when this song was put out, seeing it portrayed at different events, I assumed it was a song about being proud of being born here in the United States. 🇺🇸 I never really listened to the lyrics.
I can’t believe it was actually quite the opposite.
Thank you for the lyric narrative. Makes total sense now.

Nice to see someone "get it". This is a protest song, how being "Born in the USA" isn't a ticket to the promised land ( another great Springsteen tune). I do believe it was originally titled "Born on the 4th of July", not sure. As a life long Springsteen fan, more than 45 years, thank you for diving in where others just stick their toe. I'm Canadian, I understood it immediately, not sure why others haven't. Now, for fun, jump into "Blinded by the be an all day review :)

the definitive version (in my opinion) is on the live from New York Madison Square garden where he does it as a slow depressing melody.

I always took “they’re still there, he’s all gone” as a reference to the U.S. taking their soldiers to fight a
War there was really no business of us being in. No matter whether we lived or died, that country and it’s people would never be left the same.

I saw a movie last night (The 5 Bluds) where a Gang of Black GI’s go back to Vietnam in their senior years, to find the remains of their commander and bring him back for proper burial.

In the movie the men are getting stared at by the bar by two elderly Vietnamese gentleman. These two men sent drinks over to their table and raised their glasses to the GI’s.

There with their local guide, he tells them one of those two men is his cousin who fought with the Viet Cong. While his own father fought for RAVN. He said that war split Vietnamese families. No matter what their opinion may have been on Ho Chi Minh or the republic of Vietnam. A lot of people fought for what they felt was best for them and their families.

And being black GIs, a large portion of the people they were fighting against (The Viet Cong & NVA) largely supported black America, and it’s fight against it’s own country mistreating them.

So Bruce IMO is speaking of the damage the US did in Vietnam at the cost of their own Soldiers.

I wanted to do this: have a channel, analyze and critique song lyrics. I have much love and hate for some songs that deserve criticism, particularly co dependent love songs that romanticize damaging and toxic gestures. Take a listen to Take Thst's "Back for Good", beautiful tune with a subtly abusive message. Anyway, great work on the Springsteen, you got a sub.

Of course you ve to be proud to be born in USA, even your country for which you fought, mistreated you at your return from hell. I remember how the vets were ignored or spited by part of people who were against the war like those who raise vc flag...i m french born in 1949 and our soldiers return from indochine or algeria were mistreated too by média and syndicats, without those to be prosecuted by gouvernements. Ihave always supporter USA inVN cause they fougjt for liberty of vietnamiese people who didnt want war but North ones communist.
