You know I'm something of a vampire myself

The trailer makes the movie look like an awkward farce, but it is actually beautiful, creepy, and enigmatic. Willem Dafoe is great in this movie!

Let’s be real here William Defoe was BORN to play the role of a villain or monster from Count Orlock in shadow of the vampire to green goblin hell I’m still baffled how he hasn’t played the joker yet he’s perfect for that role has the perfect body shape and head shape the eriness and pretty could be the next Perfect Joker since Ledger and Hamill!

Turns 20 today!
I saw ads for this but missed it in theaters.
Dafoe absolutely shines as Schreck making the vampiric mystique so convincing. The facial expressions, the impish mannerisms, his stiff posture, and the monstrous appearance. Malkovich is eating up every line as Murnau.
Merhige brings some comedic attention to actors used to being able to rely on their gestures and physical expressions to make up for lack of dialogue. There's also examples of acting, method acting and disappearing into a role entirely that it becomes that person. A film crew's morality can only last for so long.
The whole movie itself for all its meta awareness still plays off like a dark, gothic tale to match its period setting. Gotta wonder too who are the real monsters here? Who's the megalomaniac? Marnau comes off as another Frankenstein-esque figure. Perhaps creators, artists, writers, filmmakers really are mad scientists
It's a collection of several things; it is a vampire film, a movie about making movies, a biopic, a complete fiction, inspired by a true story, a comedy, even a war film of sorts.
Making a deal with the devil, selling your soul and unable to distinguish between the real world and the film world can increase the fascination.
This is one of Dafoe's best on-screen performances next to Malkovich who loses himself deep as an artist with an obsession to make a work of art.

I just saw this and enjoyed it. I liked the simplicity of the film. It made me think all along until the end: is he a real vampire? The subliminal satire made you second guess yourself and wonder if Orloff was a method actor indeed, as he showed human character of being a troublesome star. Was this actor going to deeply into his role? The necromantic magic with this vampire isn't immediately obvious. Malkovich did a great job and Defoe is phenomenal. Also, props to Cary Elwes for being in this and Coppola's Dracula.

One of the greatest horror where no one scares you but you are watching monumental movie with really strong cast.I was happy that movie got its moment of shine in Oscars

Saw it in the theater and liked it, but with repeated viewings I liked it more and more, to where I felt it was great, or very nearly so. It's an excellent film, and I'm about due for a re-watch I think.

Award fact
Shadow of the Vampire was nominated for 2 Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actor for Willem Dafoe & Best Make-Up and Hairstyling.
It didn’t win any, the actual winners were Benicio Del Toro in Traffic & How the Grinch Stole Christmas (respectively)

I STILL LOVE this film, and damn well made sure to have seen it in the theatre, already loving director Merridge's film techniques! (Look for 'Begotten') Let's hope he is again soon as Count Orlock!

24 years later and now Dafoe plays the Vampire Hunter. Wow, full circle.

Apparently Willem Dafoe is casted in the 2024 remake of Nosferatu as well, directed by Robert Eggers, who also directed The Northman and The Lighthouse, should he an awesome film. Ive been impressed with Eggers' work. Dafoe isnt playing Orlok, but just the fact that he's cast feels like a huge easter egg.
