PG-8X is a great sounding, free synth plugin with built in chorus. It's a tad confusing at times for me but it doesn't kid around with that chorus. Sitala is a free drum sample plugin that comes with those old-school Roland drum sequencer sounds but it's ready for your modern DAW. For effects, I enjoy FreeAMP from Klevgrand for some interesting preamp vibes. PanCake 2 from CableGuys is a free panning plugin not too dissimilar to LFO Tool but for panning. Valhalla has their FreqEcho and Supermassive plugins for free which are quite the steal. FreqEcho alters the pitch of the echos for a wild trail of repeats. Supermassive is... Massive! Voxengo SPAN is an excellent free frequency spectrum analyzer with tons of features including mid/side display and other neat adjustments. VCV Rack is not a plugin but if you wanted to try out modular synth but don't have the cash (or any cash because it is free) it's a fun time sink for sure.
I'm under the firm belief that you could get by on free plugins alone. Sure, some look disgusting and some even sound disgusting, but you can make music with anything so don't let that keep you down. Plus, if you keep your eyes out for sales or even when a company does a promotion giving out their plugin for free, you can really start to build up quite the nice collection. I've snagged atleast $100 worth of plugins for free by now.

Gabe, I'm interested in beats with weird timing, such as 5/4 and 7/4. I challenge you to do some songs with wonky beats like that.
