Don’t complain about the weight/thickness, or Apple will revert to building thin pieces of overheating garbage lol.

I have been using the base M1 MacBook Pro 14 inch for past 8 months. It's been an absolute delight. I get about 8-9 hrs of battery life with 20% left. If you have the money buy this specific model, you won't regret it.

16” M1 Pro 32 GB 2TB. I snatched exactly the model I needed, and it’s been a delight to use every single day since then. I’m still wowed by how long the battery lasts and by the screen/sound/perf. Definitely a breakthrough model that’s still worth purchasing, specially with current deals.

My battery health on my M1 MacBook Pro from December 2020 is at 94%. After I charge it to 100% I unplug and let it go to about 30% before charging it to 100% again. It’s still a great laptop so for me to see a reason to upgrade it, there has to be a much better specs to do so.

I set out to buy a MacBook Air a couple months ago. Once I speced it up to 512 gb and 16 gb Ram I realized the base MBP 14” was a much much better value. Got it and have been very happy with it.

You can get a NEW (not renewed) 14” MacBook Pro base right now from Best Buy for $1, 599. I did this 2 weeks ago and love mine. The marginal added weight over an Air is more than worth it for more power, more ports, awesome speakers, and an amazing display. This is a killer deal. An M2 Pro is going to be significantly more expensive and the added power isn’t necessary for 95% of users. Also Best Buy’s are authorized Apple dealers and repair centers (good if you aren’t near an Apple Store).

Why do folks rag on about battery life like it's an "issue" when they're surrounded by power outlets? It seems trifling. Your battery's low? Plug it in! That's what the chargers are made for.
Battery life as in issue is only relevant to folks in remote areas with little or no access to a power source or folks who work long hours out in the field..

interesting. I can get 8-12 hours of light use out of mine. I've never touched low power mode either

I got the base model 14" MacBook pro in space grey, and I love it so far. I'll take the notch to have those nice thin bezels, and 1080p camera.

i got the 14'' base model a month after launch, here's my review after a year.
ive been using this mac every day since november 2021 for web browising and some light minecraft.

for the wear and tear there's slight delamination to the screen but it's only noticable in direct sunlight, other than that and small scuffs, nothing else, i have a plastic case to protect it

for the battery life it stills holds up pretty well considering i used it a lot (coconut battery reports 88%), and i can go throught a day easely, i always take my charger with me and mostly use it on charge at home and on the battery when i'm moving like in the train.
as for the notch i got used to it very fast and it does not bother me anymore.

i really reccomend the base model, the screen is awesome and the battery's pretty decent, and as mentionned in the video you can get it for pretty cheap!

About battery: I'm using 16" M1 Max and I have to say I have 10 hrs of light use, so it's suprising you only have 5. My battery health after 2 months and 40 cycles is still at 100% (coconut says it's 97%). I'm using al dente to always charge up to 75%! I think it makes a difference

For the battery install the charger limit app Al Dente. I have set my charge limit to 70% and my battery health hasn't really dropped after using it for months.

I was also afraid for the battery health - that's why I'm using Aldente regularly with all my mac laptops - it saves your battery by keeping the percentage between 50-60% percent when plugged in all day. Later, when I need to go for a quick meeting outside, I just let it charge till 80% and I'm done.

Try it

Idk if this is official, but it looks like you need to have your laptop connected to wall charger continuously at least for 14 days straight for the optimising to kicks in. Your battery will then drain to 80% (while still plugged in) and hold it there.

I’ve got the Max as well, and have not had battery issues. It lasts me a full day with mostly productivity software (aka MS Office) plus chrome or Safari. I suspect it’s all the open browser windows you have, particularly if you use Chrome. Granted, 99% of the time, I work from home and have it plugged in. But my battery hasn’t degraded much. Recently got an M2 MBA with 24GB RAM from work, and the Max is significantly faster and better with memory management, particularly if I run parallels. But I have to admit the Air is so nice and light.

Uninstall Chrome that you have installed to improve battery performance. Chrome used to totally drain the battery on mac os, so it can be the issue.

You can use the App AlDente Pro to stop charging the Macbook, when it hits 80%. I use it and I love it. Full control about the charging behavior.

Coming from a 2nd Gen MacBook Pro I had for 9 years, which was 4.5 pounds, I am still astounded by how much lighter my MBP 14 is, especially with the smaller footprint and thinner profile. Sure it’s thicker than an MBA, but considering how much power there is, I’ll gladly lug this laptop around. I keep my tech items for many years, so I value a little extra bulk and active cooling over thinness and no cooling. After all, heat buildup is what kills the reliability of technology items. I’m extremely satisfied overall, and I’m glad I skipped the 4th generation MacBook Pro, and held out for this model. It’s the best MacBook Pro generation since the 2nd gen, and a real return to form.

My biggest issue with the 14" is the very soft screen top layer, dust can easily penetrate the top layer and get stuck (and can't be removed).
