Man, this is the U.S. I’d love to return to. Kids approached him with respect, he approached them with respect. Told them they could fish but don’t litter, and they let him know they were going to completely honor his wishes and showed gratitude for being allowed to do so. This is what I wish our country would bring back about itself. Regardless of sex, race, religion, heritage, just have respect for your neighbor in the sense that they are their own person, and watch a majority of our problems solve themselves.
Even if he’d have said no, it may have bummed them out, but I bet they would have had no issue with it, and moved on to a bigger pond, just based off of how they seemed to have 0 entitlement issues. Which, having that kind of personal responsibility and accountability practically always leads to an even more positive experience. Way to represent just being a decent person.

Had an old man by our camp, Mr. Fred. He had some amazing oak trees on his property that always held tuns of squirrels. When I was about 8, my friend and I asked for permission to hunt. Every time we got dropped off by our parents, we would knock on mister Fred’s door to let him know we were there and his only request was to sit and have a coke with him before we left. It wasn’t until many years later after he died, that we were told that his only son died in Vietnam and he wife not long after. The locals had been sending their kids and grandkids to hunt those oak trees to keep Mr. Fred company all those years.

Bill was probably happy to have a bit of company while he was working. I bet it made his day watching em catch something from his pond.

When I would fish and hunt as a kid in Indiana/ Ohio, my dad always made sure that I knocked on the door and got permission. It was almost always a super kind, older man that would want to talk for a while as well. Sometimes they’d grab a rod too. We had some guys come to the door with a shotgun or pistol and we’d respectfully leave as they requested. But 99% of the time it lead to wonderful interactions. It’s nice to see young men doing the same. God bless. ❤
