In this video I talk about 10 things I wish I knew before studying psychology!
I go through a couple of things relevant for Australia, but most of it applies to any psych degree!
I've tried to focus on things that I haven't seen mentioned in other videos and things that I've learnt fairly late in my degree. I hope this helps anyone planning to major in psychology or considering it as a career option :)

I talk about my experiences doing a BA and majoring in psychology, as well as my experiences in honours. I feel like there's not much information about what it's like to study psych, especially beyond intro classes so feel free to ask any questions you have!

Only difference in Denmark is that we learned SPSS but we didn't learn to code. We just learned the basics of using the software. Coding would actually have been super useful.

Freud was still a big thing. Problem is that it's intro stuff as it's the history of psychology. And since all courses have a history we had to read Freud as an intro several times over... again and again. I got sick and tired of it and just refused to read it at the end. They for sure overdid some of this stuff because they didn't really create classes together but rather fought each other in a way. For example, if we learned to use specific methods in one class the class afterwards would give us papers criticising those methods so that we would not use them in that exam. All teachers had their own worldviews and wanted to make sure we understood their worldview. In all semesters we needed to learn about what the professors cared about in their personal life/worldview. If you didn't learn that you would have a really hard time during some of the exams even if you were very knowledgeable on the psychology topics.

Most useful stuff I read was in 1st semester. I think 80% of the psychology I learned at university was in the very first semester because afterwards it was mostly repetition of these same facts. But later I started reading psychology myself and discovered studies on heritability that kinda showed that what we studied at university about how groups/social culture create the human being was only a small part of the full picture. And that's knowledge you just need to read up on yourself because very few professors study heritability. It's too difficult and demands too much statistical knowledge for the regular professor to understand. And professors would teach us what they studied.
