Lately, as I’ve stepped into my fifties, I’ve been reflecting on this very idea. What you said—“Remember to live”—is so simple, yet it’s something I see so many people around me forgetting to do. Over the years, in conversations with those seeking guidance, a common regret from the older generation has been: “My focus was misplaced. I should have worked less, spent more time with my children, and simply allowed myself to enjoy life.”

I am 57 and my father passed away this week at the age of 91. Now both of my parents are gone - it's a very strange feeling. My parents grew up during the first great depression and always lived their lives accordingly - very frugal, very strict, and never really "lived" life to its fullest. My outlook on life is live for today but plan for tomorrow. RIP mom and dad - I love you both and miss you.

My late wife spent her last 5 years of life with our son. His only time with her, from birth until 5. Then she got stage 4 cancer from no where, and died 5 months later. I'm so thankful they were able to be together those years, while I commuted long distances each day to work and home again. So glad there was no preschool or daycare for him in his most formative years. Now he is smart, strong, brave, handsome, tall, etc, and just turned 9.

My favorite saying is, " You don't stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing.
I retired at 68 years old and then did a 5000 mile solo kayak trip from Maine to Key West Florida.
I had my last 2 children when I was in my early 40's. They can keep you busy and young.

I saw the light ten years ago when I was 47. Since then I have only worked part time only. 25 hours a week is all I do. The rest of my time is spent doing what I want to do, not what my employer wants me to do. Don't be a slave to the system.

Because of people like you, I am ahead in life at 29 years old. FAR ahead of my peers. Listen to your elders. You'll get ahead. Especially these days. Gen Z Needs leaders. You take yourself seriously and you'll find yourself in a leadership position real quick.

So true. If I had my time as a mother again, I would home school my children.

We're primed from young children to become productive humans in a factory-like existence, disconnected from everything that matters in life, divorced from the wonder of nature and the cosmos we exist in. The only ending living a life like that: regret.

will turn 50 this summer. grew up ranching, had an opportunity to go full time fire/ems about 10 years ago. had to sell the cows due to time comitttments with the job. my son who's now 21 has been bugging me for the last couple years about getting cattle again and learning the cow business. long story short, quitting the fire service this summer and going back to ranching. my legacy is passing that knowledge to my son.

Thanks Bjorn for reminding. How we spend our days is how we spend our lives. It's snowing outside, I am going outside with my son to throw some snowballs :)

When I was a child, my dad and I were taking a train back from a holiday and he saw a colleague there, late at night, coming back from the office. And my dad told him in a friendly way "what are you doing here? you shouldn't work so late". I think he was trying to show me that there was more to life than working long hours.

Things I've told my kids - 1. No one dies wishing they took fewer vacations, 2. When you're an adult, no one gives a hoot what your SAT, ACT or any other grade was in high school; they just don't care, 3. Money comes and money goes, but who you are matters when it goes as you'll need to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and do it again, 4. Always pay yourself first when you are working - that is, put away for retirement, save in your savings account, etc. - if you don't look out for your future, no one else will, 5. No one cares how you live, don't spend money to impress the neighbors, only impress yourself and you'll realize half of what you think you want, you don't really want or need, 6. use cash in your local commmunity - a dollar in cash is a dollar, a dollar via credit card is 97-cents to the shop owner, and 7. no matter how hard it is, throughout your life, just do the next right thing.

Just turned 54 and spent far too many years existing instead of LIVING. Living means different things to different people, but for me it means doing what "I" want instead of what society expects. I roam the forest, sip whisky, play with my cat, cook food for myself and work as little as possible. If my bills are paid, roof over my head and food in my belly I'm content. I live a very monkish life, minimalism with little excess and while it can be tough at times, it allows me to spend my time and money on what truly matters to me.

A lot of people still don't realise they work for politicians, they get the loaf of bread and we are supposed to be grateful for the crumbs they let us have. ❤️🇬🇧

You are absolutely right. I am 67 now, and two years ago I started sailing, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.

They say your life passes before your eyes before you die. I had it wrong when I believed it was minutes before death. I've reached the end of my life now and have gained great awareness. I'm shown events that I'd forgotten and seen how many mistakes I made. I was so, so driven by the quest for success and recognition that I missed time with my sons and family. Times I selfishly did what I wanted caused others pain and now I'm filled with guilt and pain, knowing I hurt the people I love. If you're still young, put your family first and cultivate a warm living relationship with others. Don't spend your senior years looking back, in pain, at all the missed moments that can't be recaptured.😞
