More contrast ideas: major to minor or the opposite. Shift the key down or up one halfstep. Add the seventh or eleventh to your chords or as a note in your melody. Take away the delay on the melody or some percussion. Then bring it back but with a dotted note value instead of non-dotted (or the other way around). Like John said: pan the reverb hard. Put two reverbs in series and pan each one hard but to opposite channels. Use one kind of chord voicing then switch (voicing = inversion type). Change the reverb pre-delay amount. Make the pre-delay the same on both main and backing vocals, then make them different by a half-note or quarter note (i.e., push one back farther than the other. Having the background vocals "in front" of the main vocal can be great if they are very interesting melodically). Hard pan the main and backing vocals differently. Then change it. Etc etc etc

It's so nice of Jon that he spends hundreds of dollars to learn something from professional courses and then shares those concepts with us. Thanks 🙏

So far one of the best advice from you. Please make more like this.

Great video. Automation is something I add on many tracks. Love it. Silence makes perfect. Before the break I introduce between 4 to 8 bars of silence. In the bars, some sound effects are fading away. Mostly with delays. It’s awesome. When the song is almost to its end I left out 2 different tracks each 8 bars. You can also apply this while building up tension. Every 8 bars you introduce 2 new elements to the song. Works out fine most of the time.

Here's a tip how to make your bass sound huge. Put tons of reverb on it (altiverb 7 ftw) and reverse the whole bass track, print it like that. Take the printed version and reverse it back, tuck it in parallel underneath the dry, thank me later

Technical dimensions of music well summarized! 👍 🎶

Jon’s gear addiction is great. We would probably be bored by now without it. I know I’m excited to see this new synth. 🤣

I like to use Cable guys halftime on a element and perhaps reverse it. I may do this in the break of my song or at a new verse to add change to the song. Its a very quick and effective method

Using this 3 dimensions can also be very helpful to make mixing decisions. You almost play tetris in a 3 dimensional room, and the elements of your track are the pieces - with a different shape depending on the sound.

But don't forget to control your low-end :-)

Although nice that you mention it for people who didn't know, the reverb width is not really new. They did that already around 2000 with trance. Tiesto - traffic is a well known example.

I am seriously concerned about Jon. All the money he could have saved/invested, just to feed drug addiction 😆

Very good tips, ear candy i love it. In the build up i cut a little of the lows and highs and turn it a little mono and the drop all up again and very wide !

If you want to hear an effective use of contrast, check out Dua Lipa's "Break My Heart". Also "Don't Stop Now". Incredible mixes!
