Amazing that Arlo still sings this song in the original key he sang it back in 1970. Sounds just as good too.

Jesus. In 1976 when I heard Arlo and this great song I was a grad student at the U. of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana). What a time and place to be young. We had so much hope.

One of the greatest cover songs ever, by one of my favorite raconteurs. Heard this as a kid, now turning 50, it's still magical.

I fell in love with this song years ago. Later i met a beautiful Missouri gal and I flew over to USA and we got hitched! We went out one night with her Pa and his girlfriend and went to a local bar that happened to have Karaoke night on that evening. I had never sung Karaoke before ever and they pushed me into doing it and asked me what would I like I asked for this one. So in front of a hundred odd folk in this roadhouse in Oklahoma I made my debut, the stage fright left as id had WAY to many Budds!
I finished the song and a voice shouts out from the back of the bar “ Hey you aint American how come you singing that?”
It went quiet and i told him i adored the song as much as the country and the people, all his buddies whooped and hollared. I asked him where he was from he said LONDON!
Then commence a hilarious argument, he says to me “ you aint bona fide” ( from Oh Brother where art thou)
I replied and told him “ we thought they had turned you into a horny toad”
Well one thing led to another with us pushing our tables up to this guys with a load of his American friends and much beer was drunk this night!
Ended up with the whole joint cheering me to sing it again!!!! So i did.
My wife and I divorced a few years later sadly so I came back to UK. I miss route 66 and the railroads and every time I hear this I remember fondly that night with my US cousins and kin folk! Havent been back to America since then back in 2010 😕
Thanks Steve for a unique song and thanks Arlo!
Never got to stay forever in the Land of The Free!🤷🏻‍♂️ Keep the faith guys!

I love this man's spirit. I used to sing this song on my guitar after hearing him. Of course I wasn't as good but it felt good to pay tribute to an artist with a heart for our country. You don't have to like guns and bombs to love our country, but you do have to love the people.

RIP Stevie. They say that a man dies twice: once when his biological body stops functioning; and twice when the last person mentions your name. Stevie will live to be 300 years.
