Understanding Stress Transformation and Mohr's Circle

In this video, we're going to take a look at stress transformation and Mohr’s circle.

Stress transformation is a way of determining the normal and shear stress components acting at a specific location within a body, as we rotate the coordinate system we are using to observe the stresses.

And Mohr's circle is a very simple but powerful technique we can use to represent stress transformation graphically.

We can use Mohr's circle to easily determine the principal stresses, the angle of rotation to the principal planes, and the maximum shear stress.

The principal stresses occur where the stress element is oriented such that the shear stresses are zero. For plane stress conditions there are two principal stresses, which are the maximum and minimum normal stresses.

Thanks for watching! Mohr's circle really is a key topic in strength of materials. Here are a few useful links:

Only a engineer can understand how much effort he had to put to make this type of quality videos....salute to him.

I have a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. For some reason, I never understood Mohr's Circle when my professor taught it around 2010. It's been bugging the hell out of me. So I looked on YouTube and found this video. It was so freaking simple. I feel like a fraud!! Thank you soothing voice guy!

I learned more in a 7:00 video than I did in a 3 hour lecture. Thank you

Quality videos like this should be made and sponsored by the government for all topics of engineering.

I studied about mohr’s circle in my very first semester. Now i am in my fifth semester and doing some analysis of structure in civil engineering. I proceed to recap what i have learnt, then i found this amazing explanation with a little bit intuitive of what is stress transformation really is. Many thanks for the uploader 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

God I love mechanical engineering so much! Seeing how abstract theoretical concepts can be applied to tackle day to day problems is amazing to see!

Apart from the fact that the process of understanding Mohr's cirlces has given my stupid brain permanent damage, got me thinking extensively about my career choices & made me question some of my life's core values...your video was pretty helpful. Thank you!

Your videos are awesome, as a civil engineering students I can say that this helps a lot to consolidate knowledge that are a little bit difficult to imagine by only reading books! Thanks for the effort of making this material

Ducking Thank You
when you said that an application for when we will need to know the stresses at angle is knowing the normal stresses across a welded part, was an amazing example.

Saying thank you isnt enough, even if i fail this exam ill leave happy knowing i can go home and review with your videos and learn quickly and effectively

The perfect explanation for a chemical engineer who has no clue about mechanical stuff. Great job! Thanks a lot!

My mind just blew out..This might be the best possible explanation provided in the world about that concept.

Why is this video not more popular?? Its a perfect explanation

With a masters degree in engineering I always felt this concept difficult to understand by reading theories from textbooks and trying to analyze 2-D drawings. Thank you so much for making this clear. Subscribed!

I'm not an engineering student, only a geology student. Yet, we still have to learn these topics (Stress, Mohr's Circle, etc) in determining rock mechanics and geotech. My midterm exam is tomorrow, so thank you for helping me.

This channel is gold
Every university should use animations like that to explain these concepts
