Baz Luhrmann has said that he decided to include rap music because rap was (and still is) as popular in our society when he was making the film as jazz was in the 1920s, and he wanted the current generation who didn’t grow up with any jazz musicians on the radio to be able to relate - that’s why he had jazz renditions of Beyoncé & Fergie songs made for the film as well. He wanted to be able to immerse the present day audience into the story by having music that sounded familiar to them. It’s cool if you don’t admire the creative choice, a lot of the older movie critics didn’t too, but it’s also important to acknowledge that the soundtrack is one of the reasons why this adaptation of Gatsby is the most popular among Americans under the age of ~30-35. And that’s before you add on the fact that the costuming, acting, and cinematography is superb, and how loyal this adaptation is to the book.
