Consider:
Furnaces are 5 stone, 2 wide, and 200 hp
Walls are 5 brick, made from 10 stone and needing to be smelted, 1 wide, and 350 hp

For 10 stone per every two blocks of your perimeter, you can double up on furnaces, having a 4-thick wall with 400 hp
Alternatively, for 10 brick for every two blocks of your perimeter, you get walls with 350 hp.

Early on, when small biters can slip thru 1-block gaps, furnaces are the superior wall.
Later, when biters are too big and need two spaces, those two walls now count for the total 700 hp, or you can use the checkerboard/tank trap layout for reduced cost, or use furnaces for the cheaper production.

I remember watching that deathworld video. I picked up the use of furnaces from there. It saved me in my deathworld for sure until I could get walls up.

wooden chests filled with mark 3 productivity modules is the most resource efficient wall. Tried it many times :)

You can also put fish bait into your furnaces to start smelting aliens

Remember, if your furnace wall is not sufficient enough for late game, always upgrade to electric furnaces for better protection.
