Master Roshi is a complicated character. On one hand, he’s a paragon of martial arts wisdom, skill and power, and, on the other hand, he’s a goofy, perverted old man who can also be pretty lazy from time to time. In fact, it’s Master Roshi’s faults that make other people underestimate his strengths; meaning, because people view him as nothing but a frail, lecherous old man, they don’t expect him to be as insanely strong and powerful as he is.

This is, more or less, the core of Master Roshi’s character; he’s a portrait of the classic fighting master from old martial arts movies. Because people underestimate Master Roshi, he’s had a lot of awesome moments where he’s exceeded others’ expectations and shown them what he’s really made of. Moments like when he trained Goku and Krillin, when he won the World Martial Arts Tournament and all of his surprising victories in the Tournament of Power. In this video, we take a look at some of Roshi’s most badass moments where he broke and exceeded the expectations of others, from the King Piccolo saga to the Universal Survival Saga.

While Master Roshi stepped back as the world’s protector by the time Dragon Ball Z rolled around, all of these moments show that the old Turtle Hermit has still got the power and skill of a true warrior. Roshi was amazing because of his technical prowess and library of unique but powerful techniques. He wasn't the strongest fighter, but he had the experience to apply what strength he did have like a surgeon.

I think the moment Beerus turned to Krillin and asked what Roshi's name was may have been the greatest Roshi moment. The look of Beerus' face in the moment just worked so well with the tone of the question that proved Roshi had won respect from a most unlikely source.
