Leo innovated right up to the very end... this was his final design for the T-style guitar. IMO the MFDs have the best tone of any pickups I've ever played and the saddle-lock inset bridge design provides the best sustain and harmonics possible for an electric guitar. I own 3 ASATs (2 Specials and a Z3 Will Ray signature B-Bender). They are incredible instruments.

I just got a Tribute version of the ASAT Special. I have 2 other G&L's (as well as a '79 Fender Strat, and Epi Explorer, a nice old arch-top, and a handmade Tele copy), this is my favorite guitar. I almost have a hard time playing any other now...Darn you Leo for making such a superb instrument!!

Love my G&L ASAT... when I got it in the early 90's it wasn't called an ASAT special. I'm not sure when they added the "special" to the name....? I guess when they put out the ASAT classic without the MFD pickups. Those MFD's sound great. I actually replaced a Telecaster with the ASAT because of the pickups and the feel of the neck. As a bonus it was custom painted at the factory in a transparent blue finish.... absolutely beautiful!

I found my dream guitar at GC in the "used" section near mint condition for $700...ASAT Special Semi-hollow in "Honeyburst" with the maple neck. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Leo did make the Broadcaster again, but he could not sell more than 1000 before copyright laws kicked in because of Gretch's Broadcaster drums. So he made a limited run of Broadcasters in '85 and '86. I've got number 914. After that, it was all ASAT.
