Thunderbolt Maximum Speed - Samsung SSD 980 vs. SSD 980 PRO

Показать описание
Testing the speed of the Samsung SSD 980 and 980 PRO in an external Thunderbolt NVMe enclosure.

The theoretical maximum data rate of Thunderbolt is 22gbps / 2,750MB/s due to encoding overhead and data reserved for displays etc. Both the Samsung drives claim to be able to achieve well over these speeds. It makes sense, therefore, that using either of them in an external drive that maxes out at 22gbps wouldn't make too much difference.

That's what I'm testing out in this video. Is the SSD 980 Pro worth the extra money?

You should read more about HMB (Host Memory Buffer). When attaching an SS 980 directly to the mainboard, the speed will reach the specifications. In the case of attaching it via Thunderbolt, the HMB cache will not work and the speed will not reach the specifications.

*But this also heavily depends on the quality of your cable. The length of the cable (for delay) and the quality and circuitry components on the drive header, as well.*

The Pro model isn't "just faster;" it's rated (and warrantied) to a much higher wear level.

I'm looking at the 10gbps version, would a 970 plus 1tb be sufficient?

I have 2 Acasis enclosures, one with a 980 Pro 2 Tb and the other with the 990 Pro 2 Tb. Both get 2800 r/w on my Mac Studio Ultra 48 cores. I also have 2 of the OWC 4M2 enclosures, one with 16 Tb and the other getting 8 Tb. They get 2500 r/w. All 4 are jump for joy wonderful!

Thanks for the comparison test. If you can answer a quick question. Does the Samsung 980 Pro get very hot when you're working with video files I guess like I do?
Thanks in adance

Great stuff, i was looking at buying the 980 as the specs were good enough and a saving in money is always welcome, but the980 pro seems to spank the test so I will have to pony up the extra money.
Still far cheaper than the Samsung x5 yet test speeds are better.

I have ordered the Acacias Thunderbolt Enclosure, But I still haven't decided the ssd. For Basis tasks and little bit of 4k footage editing and some Adobe apps for Mac, Which SSD do you prefer. I am planning to use this as my boot drive. Lovely Video!

Are there usecases in which an externel Samsung 990Pro connected via thunderbolt (M2 Macbok pro 2TB) have noticeable disadvantages over the internal SSD?
Thank you!

It's useless then to get such case right ? A 10 Gbps case would get the same speed ?

can you speak on the difference between using a 20GBPS 3.2 2x2 enclosure vs the 40? my guess would be it's a bit slower but not by more than 10%(for the 980 pro 2tb)

you can only feel the difference when transferring large files, like 50 - 100 GB file transfer.
