Why Every Christian Should Study Biblical Theology, with Andreas Kostenberger

Pastors, thoughtful Christians, and students of Scripture must learn how to carefully read and understand the Bible, but it can be difficult to know where to start! In this episode, Andreas J. Kostenberger explains how to interpret Scripture from three effective viewpoints: canonical, thematic, and ethical. We discuss how Biblical Theology is arranged book by book from the Old Testament (using the Hebrew order) through the New Testament, and how this differs from systematic theology.

Please pray for me and my children. I receive so much hate simply for asking for prayers. Prayers are ALL I NEED and want. I’m a single mother and I’m struggling to provide for my sons both are autistic and I’m overwhelmed! I lost my job because I declined the vaccine. I declined due to my heart condition I had a massive heart attack and I suffer from lupus. I am waitressing now but not making nearly enough to get by. Ever month is a battle. I can’t go back to my job at the hospital because mandates are still in place. Jesus help me to overcome my fears. Because as I struggle I am fearful. Struggling to provide for me and my children is scary Struggling to buy groceries. Struggling to pay rent. BUT I trust you Lord. Jesus hear my prayers. I’m so thankful that God has provided this far. Jesus has never left my side. Praise Jesus. Even though I’m discouraged I will keep faith! ❤

Makes perfect sense. Great interview and guest. So many times we're preaching in a way that forces the scripture to fit our concepts or we're reading the scriptures through our theological lens. It's just best to be biblical as this affirmed.

I have to listen to this yet, but before I found I was pregnant with our fifth baby (BIG surprise!), I took my first biblical theology class for a M. Div. program at Trinity International---awesome lectures on why biblical theology is so very important--crucial--for Christians. Systematic theology is definitely helpful, but biblical theology is a MUST. In the scholarly world it isn't given a lot of thought currently, though that seems to be slowly changing. In part, this is because we have Old Testament scholars and New Testament scholars, and because of that, the scholars are often territorial of their respective fields in regard to the testaments. This is a particularly large obstacle to biblical theology being done, because biblical theology requires more of a focus on the two testaments as two parts of a whole as opposed to focusing solely on the way each functions independently within its own contexts. At Liberty U, when I was initially working on a Master's in biblical studies, I was not forced to choose between the testaments. At Trinity International (and I suspect most other schools), if one wants to pursue a Master's in biblical studies, it seemed I had to choose between Old and New Testaments---which I did not want to do. (Please note this does not mean I do not see the significance and importance of understanding each testament in its own right, in its particular contexts and its place in God's progressive revelation. I am just saying that there needs to be a more balanced focus between that and understanding them within the context of the whole of Scripture, if that makes sense.)

Thank you for bringing Dr. Kostenberger on your podcast. His New Testament books have been of great value to my under and post graduate work.

After WWII Barth was asked "What is the most profound theological truth that you have gained in your yrs of study? Barth answered with, "Jesus Christ loves me so, because the bible tells me so" !!!!

Alisa, I have some friends that are into “Elijah Streams.” From what I can tell it’s a charismatic YouTube channel with some new age beliefs. I would love an episode from you about this theology and how it’s attracting Christians to these beliefs. I keep hearing about it so it must be pretty popular.

All the NT warnings about heresies are proving to be so true. I know they have been around since the lifetimes of the apostles but it's just exploding now. It's like a wind or current trying to tear us away from the solid Rock! We MUST. cling to the Word Of Truth!

Lets not forget that around the turn of the century, before the end of WW2, in the old Princeton Seminary a leading Dutch/German Scholar by the name of Geerhardus Vos wrote his "Biblical Theology" which he was originally going to call "the History of Revelation". He was given the chair of "Biblical Theology" at that institution. His book continues to be a best seller and even today the OPC has a podcast entitled "Reformed Forum, Vos Group" which has worked through the last ten years page after page of Vos' Biblical Theology.
I'm tempted to buy Andreas Kostenberger's book and compare them.

Love your podcasts and how thoughtful and deep every topic is, the only thing I found distracting is the fact that Lisa isn't always engaged, looking at her phone/notes and seemingly not always paying attention. I find that distracting and a bit disrespectful, and I say it not criticize, but rather to help make her podcast even better.

Speaking of Theology, I would really love to see a new video on, the difference between majoring in:
Theology vs.
"Religious studies" vs.
Philosophy of Religion How would the classes you take be different?

As for today, that's a hefty-size book he has. Should be informative.
