Why Do Some Acorns Have Holes Drilled Into Their Sides?

Have you ever wondered why some acorns have holes drilled into their sides? Well, the culprit is this creature. This is an acorn weevil. And that supersized powertool of a snout is called a rostrum. It’s the perfect device for digging through the insides of those yummy acorns. They usually go for greener ones, which are softer and not too bitter, rotating their heads and using those fancy snouts as drills. Female acorn weevils have longer rostrums than males. It’s because they don't drill just to satiate their hunger but also to build a nursery. The deeper they dig, the safer the babies will be. While the larvae develop, they consume the interior of the acorn until they emerge in adult form. To increase the chance of survival, female weevils drill all over an oak tree. They would even steal other females' holes if the opportunity arises.

I remember at school there was a oak tree that had acorns everywhere, I’d pick them up and put them in a ziplock bag and then one day I went to my room and there’s grubs all in the bag. I didn’t kno how they got in there… until now.

I would say that is the same thing that makes holes in chestnuts. That what the worm in chestnuts come from. It is these little buggers.
