1500 ÷ 100 (Dividing by one hundred)
Показать описание
Method: Students should use their knowledge of place value to know that when dividing by one hundred they are making the number one hundred times smaller and therefore moving each digit two places to the right on the place value chart (Th = Thousands, H= Hundreds, T = Tens, O = Ones).
E.g. Th H T O becomes Th H T O
1 5 0 0 1 5
The 5 hundreds have become 5 ones because one is one hundred times smaller than one hundred and the 1 thousand has become 1 ten because ten is one hundred times smaller than one thousand. Although it may seem sensible to simplify this process by telling students that you ‘subtract two zeros’ when dividing by one hundred, THIS IS NOT CORRECT and has the potential to cause great confusion when students start working with decimals because the subtracting zero rule will not work. E.g. you can't subtract two zeros when calculating 15 ÷ 100.
Example Questions: 3500 ÷ 100 = 8800 ÷ 100 = 2200 ÷ 100 =
