I think it was wise to hire him for the show, otherwise it would have been awkward if the show was named The Tonight Show with Conan O'brien but the host himself wasn't named Conan O'brien.

Did you know that Lisa Kudrow was in the audience the whole time. She's the one who gave Conan the idea and motivation to go on and audition for Late Night. Soon after that Lisa went and auditioned for the part of Phoebe Buffay on Friends and got the part. They've always been like best friends her and Conan.
