I have been listening to sir Attenborough narration for over 20 years now . From
My early teens to now going into my 40s and 4 children later . It’s amazing .
Please stay healthy always sir .

Only the legend himself, David Attenborough, could talk about a plant for almost 2 minutes, and still leave me wanting to know more.

Earlier this week I tried to feed my flytrap and the trap never gave the final squeeze (as the fly had been chilled for easier management)... Direct Thanks to Sir David Attenborough, The Green Planet, and YouTubes uncanny algorithm as I now know why!

This is fascinating stuff. Fly traps are a bit like Chinese finger cuffs, where the more you try to escape, the more locked in you get. If a hapless bug gets trapped in a flytrap, but lays perfectly still and waits, it could slink out alive. If it struggles (which it usually will) and continues to trip the sensors, it gets the final lockdown.

The ending is actually quite a bit of a tease as a plant that eats insects also grows plants(flowers) to attract pollenating insects...?

Turns out it grows it's plants(flowers) as far away as possible from it's traps to avoid this problem. Just fascinating.

I remember talking to a sound designer who used to work in Bristol where these Nature Documentaries are edited. I hadn’t really thought about the incredible amount of Foley (reproduced sounds for plants and animals) that are in these films. He said obviously when you have a group of lions eating a wildebeest on the plains of Africa you don’t have a guy with a boom mic standing next to them, so they have to recreate all of the sound from scratch with Foley artists. Nature Documentaries are as heavy with sound design as a Star Wars film.

It is something to see the environment they are from. In the outer coastal plain of the Carolinas, there are areas of mineral deficient quarts/silica soil where fires often would burn and flat areas of uplands where rain accumulates upon a harder substrate...a sunny bog or seep wherein minimal nutrients are brought in by flowing water...most of the water is from the rain itself.
Stunted cypress trees and shortened pond pines line these acidic conditions and in the ground layer exposed to enough sun you will find sundews, spaghnum mosses (which decay slowly and make it more acidic), pitcher plants, bladderworts, butterworts and in rare cases...the venus flytrap.
Their flowers, to me, are beautiful and so unique popping up above the yellow eyed grasses, bog sedges, rushes and pipeworts. A constant buzz of flies, beetles, moths, skippers, butterflies and bees abound.
Where there is so little bounty of minerals from the deep earth, we still find life in the land of fire and rain.

I never knew that.... please BBC forget competing with all the crap I avoid by not watching tv at all. Stick to this with this incredible man and show us wonders that make me weep in joy and wonder. Show us this amazing world so we can protect it

Sir David Attenborough has been named a UN Champion of the Earth in recognition of the environmentalist's commitment to sharing stories about the natural world and climate change.

I wonder how exactly the Venus Flytrap evolved, such a strange yet intelligent plant.
