I used to have some of these but they almost never caught any flies so I decided to manually feed them but my parents said not to. The plant died.

R.I.P fly.

You were a funny, charismatic and courageous fly. But most importantly, you were a good fly. You will not be forgotten by not one, but by all 6.9 million people who watched this. May your soul rest in peace.

Venus flytraps should have their own theme music.

I used to keep these plants around my home specifically for that purpose. They never disappoint in eliminating those pesky flies. Of course, their diet consists of more than just flies. If you wish to feed them on your own since they require nutrition, bloodworms are the way to go. I would be careful not to feed them as often as you would think though, as they digest food slowly. It could take 7 to 8 days or more for them to fully digest a meal while dormant. Although they are known as carnivorous plants, and do feed on insects whenever the occasion arises, oftentimes they can live without human interference of being fed, and do not have to be fed for weeks besides basic sunlight and watering, being a plant. However, usually they end up dying due to one simple misstep, or if not taken care of properly--such as messing with the guard hairs of the flytrap. While the hairs can be triggered on accident, and this will not harm the plant immediately, activating them purposefully and causing the trap(s) to close can end up killing them. You will often see the plant begin to turn black which indicates that it is dying, though seeing black/brown leaves aren't always uncommon in flytraps. There are, of course, plenty of other various causes that may put your carnivorous plant into dire straights--albeit I've typed enough here. While I have cared for healthy Venus flytraps inside my home, they do best as outdoor plants.

Edit: I forgot to mention for first time owners, a cluster of flytraps makes up the entire plant itself, therefore it is not necessary to feed all the fly traps. Instead, it is recommended to feed only one trap within the cluster so you're not overfeeding the plant.
👍For the overall well-being of your plant, It is best to refrain from giving it larger insects that it may not be able to handle. (digestive-wise)

Interesting fact: they have little spikes inside them, and when the fly touches it any of them once, nothing will happen. But boy, if it touches it twice... Snap, ur life is over. It's a very cool mechanism to make sure there's actually a prey there, since plants can't see with eyes.
