I’ve always told people that you don’t need great equipment to take great photos…. but it absolutely helps. Some of my favorite photos I’ve taken have been with a cheap Canon film body and a kit 50mm, but those were far and few between when compared to the higher end cameras and lenses I’ve acquired since.

It’s definitely both! I’m so glad this video went this way instead of, “camera gear doesn’t matter”. It bothers me so much when all these photo/video YouTube’s say that and then show you the camera they are shooting with and it’s a camera worth more than some peoples homes. Here’s my RED Cinema Camera, but gear doesn’t matter, you can shoot just like I do! Yeah, okay. 😂

Forget the app, just use an SD card adapter for your phone. Lightning to SD for iPhone
USB C to SD for android

Absolutely love this discussion Evan, I'm pretty sure you hit it right on the head with in the first 2 minutes or so in regards to how everything was nuanced.

And your hoodie test is definitely something that most people should start doing more of when it comes to how often they can take their here on the go. But at the end of the day there is a combination of those two things that is always going to be at play.

I feel that most people are starting to you adopt that my said instead of just saying " you need to be good and if you're good your equipment doesn't matter"

Totally agree with your points but you should have used the awesome 18mm 1.4 lens with your XPro3. The race would have been even closer compared to the Q2 and even sizewise it would have been more similar :)

Great video, Evan. This topic is extremely popular. I think it's a combination of both - but I put more emphasis on you, the photographer. Without the photographer's creativity the 'tool' is limited. With that, having the gear necessary to get the shot matters. Finding the tool that helps us capture our individual creativity is extremely important. Thanks mate - well done!

“I can take photos of my watch” I just imagine you jogging and then stopping just to take a photo and document what time it is. 😂
(I know it’s about the watch body) lol

Just a note on the bokeh differences: The Leica was able to achieve better separation from the background and more blurred background because it is a full frame camera, however you didn't take into consideration that you can change the lens on the Fujifilm where you could adopt a lens with with higher F-stop or you could just throw on a longer lens and create even more separation from the background. I agree that the gear matters, the Camera matters in some situations but the lens is the most important part of the kit. You will never get the same results with a kit zoom lens what you can get from eg. an f/1.2 prime. But the end of the day the image what matters and people are able to create stunning images with their phones or with a pinhole camera.

Great job on this subject. It's a hard one to cover and not offend people. A couple of things I would add... A better camera often makes it easier to get the shot (think faster FPS, better in low light, better AF etc). Sure you may be able to get the same shot... but you might have to work it longer and find creative ways get the image. The second one is about enjoyment - sure... I can could get a better image with one camera, BUT if the process is much more enjoyable with a different camera and you find that it helps you get in a creative zone... then that camera becomes the better option. It is our limitations that inspire creativity - take that as you will.

What I believe it means is, a photographer can get more out of less than a non-photographer can get with the best gear. Kai and Lok proved this time and time again with their pro photog cheap camera series back on the Digital Rev channel. This is because at the end of the day, we tell the camera what to take the picture of. No camera can compensate for our vision, creativity and all the sweat equity we put into learning this craft.
