The Chaco War was interesting that it was the first major conflict in South America to utilize planes and tanks.
On paper, Bolivia had the advantage in manpower and modern equipment but due to poor logistics and tanks being bogged down by the rough landscape, Paraguay gained the upper hand despite the lack of modern equipment.
Eventually the League of Nations negotiated a ceasefire with Paraguay being granted the Chaco territory in the end.

It's like when you declare war on a nation in Civ 6 and forget about it just to fight like 2 era later.

The Chaco War faced much criticism from the left in Paraguay, and from other groups as well. Many saw it as a pointless conflict and a war between brothers. Famous Paraguayan writer Roa Bastos was a veteran of the Chaco War and wrote about it in his novel “Hijo de Hombre.” Where he used the lack of water in the battlefield (which was a real concern and caused many to die of thirst) as an analogy for lack of love and connection between people. It’s an excellent novel.

From the arms dealers that would give their weapons, they were told there was petroleum in the Chaco as well. Rockefellers in Bolivia and what would now be BP oil with Paraguay.

Paraguay would also develop portable mortar tactics first seen very late into WW1 that would then be copied/reused for Japan's mortar tactics in WW2, there's evidence that they developed the same tactics without actually knowing each other's tactics in a wild case of coincidence.

For the soldiers themselves, a lot of them were conscripted literally from the indigenous populations. This led to a really neat double-edged sword that both sides couldn't speak to each other because most of the time, they only spoke Guarani or Aymara/Quechua. Also of note, the harsh "Green Desert" of the Chaco was something the Guarani didn't like but could tolerate it, and the mountainous peoples of Bolivia were absolutely obliterated by it. It's been said that more people died to the land than to the people fighting for it.

And lastly my greatest fact of the war was the sickest burn of the century. Because Bolivia was losing the war 3/4ths of the way in, the military felt their losses was because of the president at the time and went for a bloodless coup detat. However once the president walked out of the palace in front of the military high command, he congratulated the general on "finally winning his first battle".

Also fun fact: Russian white immigrants and german advisors were involved too. Russian whites fighting on Paraguay side, and german advisor on Bolivian side

Also, of all nations, czechoslovakia was involved.
Edit: this is literally my most liked comment.

Major contributor to the death toll was the lack of water causing thousands to die of thirst.

Fun fact: Bolivia had a much bigger army and even had some tanks in some divisions, while Paraguay was still with manpower crisis due to the Triple Alliance war. It is known, that most Paraguayan army had no guns, and most of their soldiers used machetes as weapons, after killing a bolivian soldier, they would steal their weapons and use them.

Also, bolivia had a WW1 veterans German General as Chief of the Army.

And it is believed that Jose Felix Estigarribia, marshall of Paraguay was the first general to use blitzkrieg-like strategies in a major war.

Southern Latin American countries war is pretty underrated considering that there are still disputed over land until today.

No coastline, the mountainous terrain and the Amazon to the east making land trade very hard must have been very frustrating and as the war trully began logistics was likely a nightmare.

Knowing that humans fought a war over a bucket, the disclaimer about shoes seems warranted.

Paraguay and uruguay are so small and yet bold during this period it’s a miracle they didn’t just get conquered by Bolivia and Argentina

Fun fact, Paraguay also really likes US president Rutherford B. Hayes for negotiating a peace settlement for them in the Paraguayan War, awarding them territory. This is why in their Capitol there is a "Villa Hayes" in his honor!
