China's Mass Surveillance Phone App

Chinese authorities are using a mobile app to carry out illegal mass surveillance and arbitrary detention of Muslims in China’s western Xinjiang region.

Between January 2018 and February 2019, Human Rights Watch was able to reverse engineer the mobile app that officials use to connect to the Integrated Joint Operations Platform (IJOP), the Xinjiang policing program that aggregates data about people and flags those deemed potentially threatening. By examining the design of the app, which at the time was publicly available, Human Rights Watch found that Xinjiang authorities are collecting a wide array of information from ordinary people.

Why is it state surveillance is only discussed in reference to China? Most of the Five Eyes countries have mandatory metadata retention and deencryption laws. Most government agencies can easily access you data and track everything you're looking at. There's also surveillance capitalism which is a huge threat to privacy and human rights. And those are just a few of the things that the public actually know about.

I live in Indonesia, where radicalism and terrorism are very disturbing, in my opinion this way makes it difficult for the state of China to be attacked by terrorists and foreign parties is difficult to conduct interference or provocation in the Chinese community. The reason why the government has such hush regulations is that the Uighurs have killed some innocent citizens indiscriminately people who were killed are just 2km from my highschool. I totally agree that they should have their basic right that they could vote to leave china or not. but the government provides so many privileges for Uighurs. they are free of tuition fees and have their own tutor for free. but in that school, they have something with students with Han ethnicity. peace, may God bless us, no more blood.

Disagree with the video. First, can someone give me an example which country-level security officer cannot pull up an individual's profile? No, every single country's security officer can easily pull up other's profile. And that profile showed in the video is using all over the country, not only using in Xinjiang region. Second, the CCTV system is a best, useful and reliable security system in the world right now. Have you heard any terrorist or bomber attack in China? Why? On the other side, the FBI and the CIA are the best intelligent and information collecting department in the world, but they are still cannot prevent all of the attacks in the USA, this is not mean they are not working hard, just because they are shorthand, if they can use the CCTV system, terrorist attacks cannot happen in the USA. Human rights? Right of life is the most important human right, if you were dead, you had nothing but a body. Last point, the camp of re-education problem, all of the terrorists have the same situation, they do not have a job, some of the terrorists are rich but it does not mean they have a job, if they do not have a job, they will follow the religion go to the extreme side. In the end, if you disagree with my points, can you give me a better idea to run the Xinjiang region or China? Do not say democracy, please, Libya, Egypt, Iraq and so on, they are the example who had a wrong regime with a democracy.
